Sodium benzoate - 07/29/18 07:08 AM

A while back I ordered some sodium benzoate. I ordered it from a soap and body product supply house. It has a a granual consistency. Almost like tiny dedicate ball's. My question is. Is this common? My assumption is that it would come more powdered for. It's not that big a deal. I ran some threw a coffee grinder today to powder it. Just wondering if I should even bother

S Benzoate comes in several forms as I have found over the years. Some is powdery, some is granulated and there is some called extruded. What varies is how easily it will dissolve in a product or liquid.

The extruded is much larger and cylindrical in shape. It does requires more contact time in a product to dissolve in my experience.

I believe the extruded is designed for some purposes to see the SB in the product to ensure maximum contact exposure in proportion to the volume of material to be treated. Good contact is important for long term preservation of any product.

Other elements are needed to ensure the life of a product without issues down the road.

Other then that the action of the product should be the same.

Thanks Bob. Was hoping you would chime in. I did put some in water to see how easily it would dissolve. With a quick stir it dissolved rather quickly. I do get the feeling it would take longer to dissolve in a bait, which is what I purchased it for.

pre mix the desired SB in some warm water first then mix in thoroughly into your bait.

I bought some from Lesel Reuwsaat and yes, it was in "tiny ball" form.

I always keep mine in a sealed container so it does not go stale. Fresh SB is important.

I wish that I had done this. Recently I made the Bacon Bait posted by Lazarus. I added the SB and other additives and instead of allowing everything to meld together in one container I portioned everything out into smaller containers to be placed into the fridge to meld.

I'm sure that it'll be alright, but I'm also sure that it won't be as good as what it could be.

You will be fine.If you are worried about it,you could let it get to room temperature and mix it,a couple more times and refrigerate after.

What is the difference between food grade SB and bait makers formula SB. Plus how much SB by volume to 1 gallon of meat?

Does sb loose its effectiveness after sitting awhile? I've got some that's a couple years old. Tried making simple bait few years back and haven't done it since.

foxlaketrapper, I am not sure the difference or if there is a difference but I do know that I have been successful adding 1 cup of sb top one gallon of bait base. I am not even close to a professional have only made about 4 different meat based baits for coyotes so far but at 1 cup to a gallon I get good results have some on a shelf that has been there a year and is still what it was when I added the sb. my problem is figuring out how much glycerin to add to anti freeze it.

Bob, I bought both your bobcat bait and a bottle of your bait solution at the end of last season. I will start the season with your bait and I used your solution on a gallon of ground bobcat meat. I just made it 1 month ago and everything I'm reading says it gets better with age! I planned on letting it sit til next season, and then just read above you say that bait needs extra ingredients to last over long periods of time. Does your bait solution have the " long term" ingredients?
Thanks
Rick
