Locklear's bait solution - 12/06/18 03:55 PM

I have some of Locklear's bait solution I am getting ready to make a batch of bait with.

I can't find out if I need to add a preservative like SB or if it's already mixed in the solution??

I've come to like pretty fresh meats for my baits. I don't want it tainting and breaking down.

Any insight??

Thanx!

I can't remember what Clint said about it but you can always call or email him.

I went back on the radio shows and on Trapping Radio Episode 209 about the 25 minute mark he addresses this question. He says it has SB in the solution to almost the point of saturation. You might still have to add some more if you still see off gassing after 4-5 days.

Thanx! I appreciate the response! Figured someone here would have the info...I'd imagine getting ahold of Clint this time of year could be hit or miss.

Can't hurt to add some if you have it

I still add a half a cup per gallon of meat, regardless. Mix it with a little warm water, and mix in. Stir with a drill and paint mixer.

Never hurts to add more SB if in question. SB and MP are necessities for good bait making. If you don't plan to have any carry over bait for future years you can skip the MP. However if making a large amount it is always a good practice to add MP to a batch. Adding some salt will help as well in curing and preserving baits of all types.

Thanx Bob.

Should I be adding MP to bait solutions? Or if I were making my own bait without solution? Or same "rule" as the SB and "it doesn't hurt to add some more?".

I'm no bait maker. But I like to bait a little heavy and like a fresh meat base. I have Dobbin's and deer, (yours) Jameson's and bobcat, and now Locklear's solutions and turkey.

The Dobbin's and Jameson's have been jarred for...man. At least 4-5 years. From the outside, all looks well. Meat is still pink. Will have to give it a sniff.

If the meat was prepared and preserved adequately the added bait solutions to the meats should be very effective for you as long as you do your part with good sets on location.

The SB and MP is added to your meat base upon reaching the stage of aging that you have established. It is after your base meat has been preserved that you can then blend in your bait solution.

I cant speak for others solution and how it has been developed. I don't know if any Bait Solution has enough preservative to handle stopping base meats adequately. That question needs to be asked to the formulator if they will share that information with you.

Thanx Bob! I appreciate the response!

I've never added MP...but I have added SB to all 3 batches I've made so far. Your solution and Dobbin's we're both used 5 years ago or so. They all look and smell right...so they aughta be fine.

I will get some MP to start adding to my bases along with the SB.

I actually haven't used any of the bait I have made lol. Gave a few jars away and it reportedly worked well.

After 5 years, I'd know if it wasn't preserved right lol...

Found a jar of your K9 Stopper I didn't get to use either...it still smells good...well...good as in it should work on the trapline! Lol. Definitely a different smelling bait. I will be using some next week!

That K-9 stopper is a good bait with a dab of gland lure or just some urine as a side odor. All predators like egg flavor and odor. Good pre bait material and edible as well.
