Some pharmacies sell a product called thick it that may suit your needs. there are several gum type products also that will do the job. Just add what ever thickener slowly as some will thicken quickly some will thicken over a period of hours. If you add too much you may get a jello like product when it peaks. Some use Lecithin also as a consumer product thickener. Drug stores and some grocery stores sell it.

you failed to tell us what the target species is but

for water critters, JR & Sons as well as Grawes sell thickeners, surely you already have their catalogs on your desk?

for land critters some use: blood meal, bone meal, glycerin

& garden centers sell Sorb-it too

How thick can glycerin make a liquid?

with no solid material, maybe like syrup, maybe, depending on how much you use.

Adding another fluid liquid just makes more liquid. Adding glycerin to a somewhat dry heavier base material will paste it up some and make it sticky. But beyond that it is still a liquid and a good anti freeze.

Glycerin is a heavier dense liquid but still a liquid.

If you need to thicken something you must use something to absorb and/or cause a binding reaction with the liquid. This action will turn the fluid into some type of more viscous solids. Like Ron says you need some solids in something to make it bind or help it to thicken. If it is a very fluid material it will require more thickener to achieve the end result.

Many things will do this however some organics only bind for short periods of time before they begin to release some of the captured liquid. For short term fixes those materials would be fine for personal use. Commercial work requires stable fixed holding capacity in a product so better materials are required.

My marten lure I add Skunk essence to warmed up vaseline. After it cools down it is a nice paste like toothpaste and it holds the odor well
