Beaver Castor and Mineral Oil? - 04/13/20 10:00 PM
I'm wanting to make myself a simple castor lure and wondered if mineral oil can be used in place of glycerin with the ground castor? Would it have any antifreeze properties like glycerin?

Look in archives, I have to believe you can find your answer there. I am not experienced I. Lure making enough to give a definitive answer.

I did look there and only found one post mentioning it. Just looking for more opinions I guess. Thanks.

I bought glycerine because that is what I was told worked. Don't know if other things will work.

I know my dad used it years ago. I've never used anything but sac oil with castor to make a beaver lure. It doesn't freeze hard enough to stop it from smelling a good ways. If it is freezing in the bottle so you can't get it out you can always carry it in a shirt pocket. Personally I usually just mix up a little at a time and chop the the castors up with a pocket knife. Not as fine as ground up, but they seem to have plenty of air space between them in the bottle and I've never had a problem getting a little out of the bottle to lure a set with.

Here is one that I found in a pile of formulas that I acquired. Never made it.
4 ounces mineral oil
1/2 ounce beaver castor
1 tsp. bergamot oil
mix well, use 8-12 drops per set
there are about a dozen more using mineral oil.
I would use mineral oil if i had no glycerine.

There are a lot of old lure recipes using paraffin oil. Which sounds like it was mineral oil.
"I think, there are may be a slight differences between mineral oil and paraffin oil. Actually, paraffin oil is a kind of mineral oil in broad scene. There are three basic classes of refined mineral oils:"
I got that when I searched paraffin oil

Thanks everyone. I will try it and see how it works. I saw an earlier posts where someone uses a capful of peppermint schnapps and I might try a batch with that added. Should work for beaver and bobcats.

Mineral oil is excellent for beaver lure. I don’t use a “lot” when I use it, but I do use it in pretty much every castor lure that I’ve made. I like to see the sheen when using it at a set after I splash the water
