Hey guys I’m a fairly new trapping and I enjoy hands on things and was thinking about delving into making some simple bait. I would prefer not to use a bait solution and plan to use pickling salt to preserve it. Any simple canine bait recipes with ground venison/pork and eggs? I could probably buy some essential oils from Walmart if needed.

I wouldn't recommend making your own attractors if you are a beginner. When you're a beginner, there are tons of things one can do wrong. Bad locations (whether that's macro, intermediate, or micro location,) improper trap bedding, improper trap placement, bad or suspicious looking sets, etc, etc, etc. If you're making your own attractors, that is one more thing that can be wrong. Buy some proven professionally made attractors and you'll be glad you did. I would recommend Mark June's lures if your predator trapping. They are some of the best out there.
If you can't buy anything else, as far as attractors go, get coyote, red fox, and bobcat urine, definitely! Urine is one of the best attractors out there, and it's totally natural. I love Ernest Winter's urines ( www.winterwildlifecontrolbaitandlure.com ) Top Quality. southernsnares.com also has good urine for a bargain price!

During my 1st & 2nd trapping seasons I wanted to make my own attractors too. I did and failed miserably. I caught a total of 5 coyotes, 7 bobcats, and 1 fox in the span of 2 seasons (our seasons are 5 months long) and only one out of all of those were on stuff I made. The rest came of professionally made stuff.

I will say one thing though; lots of animals love bacon grease! Good luck, Jakob!

Thanks for responding. I’ve caught one coyote ever. Had two pullouts and a few chew outs in the past year or two. I bought some bait from a tailgater at the indiana trapping convention and to me, it has no smell at all, same with others when I asked them to smell it. I’ve used half the container this season and have only had one coyote work a set with that bait. To me it seems like that is the issue, I know I’m on hood location with good trap bedding and scent control, so it’s just a little discouraging. Other than that I have no bait, just a little bit of gland lure and red fox urine. Basically what I’m asking is a little bit of ground deer meat down a hole better than plain old urine. Would it be best to use a combo? Etc...

Little deer meat and bacon and bacon grease will work pretty good. Sardines will work for about everything also.

Don’t be afraid to use the urine along with the venison . Bait in the hole urine on the backing . You didn’t say how much of the commercial bait you are using in the hole ?

I would say I use roughly a teaspoon to a teaspoon and a half of bait. I find a stick about finger size and throw a good dollop in the hole

In my opinion that sounds about right for a mild smelling bait. A lot of young guys starting out with a strong bait use soo much bait that a coyote walks right on by .
