Coon Bait

Coon Bait - 02/19/21 04:47 PM

I have made my own coon bait from minnows. I used Anise oil along with butterscotch flavored, and peppermint added smoked flavored to the fish, and also added vanilla to this bait mix. I then add sodium benzoate to stop the fermenting of the bait, I then mix in propylene glycol to prevent the bait from freezing. I did have to add jell-ton my mix to make it a thicker past to work in my dog proof traps.

1. Grind fish into chucks
2. Add the oils and flavored scents
3. Add my Propylene Glycol, Sodium Benzoate,
4. Mix this all of the components together

It sounds interesting.
1. Did it work as well as other things you’ve tried?
2. Did it work better in warm fall weather or after freeze up?
3. Did you notice the coon “spit it out” within a few feet of the set?
4. Have you put out a trail cam to see how coon work this bait?
5. How do you store it in the off season?
6. All of these ingredients are proven coon attractors. But considering the number added, does one flavor overcome the others?
7. You’ve said you use sodium benzoate to stop the fermentation. Have you tried this combination without fermentation?

Most folks use salt to preserve fish baits if I’m not mistaken.

Wondering how much SB per gallon ya used?

Teacher,

1.) It worked well with my combination that I used with my DP's I also used marshmallows and dog food with it.They worked very good
2.) I did not try this batch during the fall weather, I only used this batch in the cold weather up to the closing of season. I used mackerel, sardines blueberry syrup and Sodium Benzoate Propylene Glycol.
3.) All of the bait is edible for them.
4.) No I have not had a trail cam set up on any of my DP's with my bait.
5.) Store in peanut butter jars in the garage
6.) Well I have not got down to a perfect mixture yet, I have the base mixture then then add the next scent or two to make a combination of two or more, so that they have something to smell and taste.
7.) No as sodium benzoate this is a persecutive I like to let my base bait spoil them finish it.
8.) SB is two table spoons to the gallon is what I use, if not I use 3 per gallon.

Kb,
I’m impressed with your response. Sounds like you have a winner in that coon like it.
