Beaver tail oil - 07/06/21 06:25 PM

Question, since I've not made or used beaver tail oil before. I have a five gallon bucket cooking now. At what temperature does beaver tail oil solidify? Wondering if it will solidify in cold weather and if so, ho hard? Will it solidify into a paste that you can dip out with a stick or will it get hard like lard in a freezer, or will it stay an oil down to subzero temperatures?

Mine seems to be the consistency of grease in the winter time. Summer time it’s fluid.

I does get thicker in cold temps. I have stored working tail chunks in my root cellar and the temps are usually 15-20 degrees warmer than the outside temperatures and they oil is still thin enough to draw it off with the baster. I haven't done it, but I would think you could add glycerin or glycol and keep it from getting to thick.

I think you will find Mineral oil would be a better choice for anti freezing the tail oil or keeping it more workable in colder temps.
