Tonquin musk authentic?

Tonquin musk authentic? - 07/13/21 08:23 PM

Not to tick anybody off, because I'm not sure if anyone from this company frequents here. But Forsyth Lures claims to have a tincture of real authentic Tonquin musk from Asia. https://forsythlure.com/lure_ingredients.html

Is this authentic, and if so how diluted? I know there are some places where you can get the real stuff, but I've heard the quality is unreliable at best, to very poor and the prices I have seen are very high.

This would seem to be at a price affordable to experiment with, if it wasn't so diluted that you had to pour gobs of it in, and it was the real deal. Or would I be better off just using a good synthetic like Paul or Bob sell?

I'm a little leary of a "tincture" of something that is both expensive and extremely hard to find, because there is no mention of how diluted the tincture is, for all I know it could be a quarter of a musk pod in a 55 gallon drum of liquid.

Ive got some real Himalayan musk that I believe was tinctured at a rate of approximately a third of an ounce to a gallon of base and it is amazingly strong. It has the ability to really over power stuff even being cut at that rate. With that said I bought the stuff off another lure maker that was quitting and had to take his word for it being authentic. But based off the potency of it, the price he paid for the musk and the information I could find about Himalayan musk I have no reason to doubt him.

I would think the tincture may be a weak one, unless his price is high enough for his tinctured Tonquin. Here's what I found for the pods. There may be some cheaper, but I don't know - https://sibermusk.com/product-category/whole-musk-pod/siberian-musk-pods/

There are some restrictions with possession / and buy/sell of musk pods and any related authentic materials in the U.S. Authentic musk pods are a customs enforced/regulated item. Not sure of the laws in Canada. Use caution so as not to get yourself in dutch. Tinctures may be quite legal to purchase however I am not caught up on these laws.

John,
Probably a reasonable way to get answers to my questions.
Paul,
That is the site I usually saw also, there are other places at times but they may be scams. On there a 10% tincture is $195 for 30ml/1oz while Forsyth is selling 25ml for $25 Canadian. Made me wonder how diluted his tincture was. Guess I'll ask him, and ask about whether he ships it to the US, never even thought of that.

Forsyth notes on his seal oil that it can't be shipped to USA but I dont see anything on the Tonquin so bet he can ship it legally. A ten percent tincture of the real Tonquin would be might strong for lure making unless ur making very large batches. My understanding was the trapping industry of yesterday was mostly just tincturing the shells or empty pods because of cost and still had a very strong product.

Interesting I have some very old real stuff, when you got good pure stuff it don't take much.
I have not needed to look for more, but will some day.
Other ingredients I have learned not everyone sell s
the same some are cut more than others.
Weird though the price is never cut laugh

Just an update, emailed Stan and he got back to me. He gets it already in tincture from Asia and said he has been getting it from the same place for 25 years and it is reliably consistent. Said he thought it was around 3% but not sure, and that he ships to the US, no problem on that.

Think I might try some, at the price I can take a gamble and see what I think of it when it arrives. Maybe order me some good synthetic and try and compare the two.

Bought a couple oz of. Siberian deer musk pure. is what the label says. very very strong liquid the color of orange pekoe tea. $16 /oz six-seven years ago. Has to be a tincture as there are no solids in it. A cap full in a gallon is too
Much.
