Shipping skunky lures

Shipping skunky lures - 06/01/22 06:10 PM

Week ago I shipped the box of lures I donated to trapperman auction. Lady at post office was teasing me about box smelling (I couldn't smell it). She asked what was in it and I told her animal control products. She laughed and said it should work. Today I take 6 more boxes in and thought I had done a better job of packaging skunky lures. Nope she could still smell them but said it wasn't too bad and not to worry. In the discussion I mentioned what I had done to try to control odors but those lures with skunk in them were not staying contained. She laughed and said she thought the skunk smelled like weed...... Now I'm worried some pot smoker is going to find them in transit thinking they hit the jackpot and steal it. I told her if I ever start selling commercially I'd be shipping lots more and when she said I couldn't smell it because I was use to it I offered a to bring them some to keep at post office so they could get use to it also.....she said NO. Any reasonable way to contain it better? I tape lids and double zip lock bag it. Not going paint can and cat litter or I would need ti charge $25 dollars extra for shipping materials and shipping. She promised it was acceptable but I'm afraid someone else might be offended. And I don't think these lures are that skunky, just enough to give them some legs.

Welcome to shipping lures and baits. Be prepared for some opened and ceased boxes along the way. It is best to add a small swatch of saturated mint oil to each questionable box to help to mask the odor. I tear a small piece of those blue heavy-duty paper shop towels off and keep a bottle of spearmint or peppermint oil by the packing table to use as needed which is often. smile

They also sell foil mylar zip lock bags in various sizes. We buy two sizes for our 1 oz and 4 oz. lure bottles. Those that have skunk as a side ingredient and others that are hard core LDC lures. Dope sellers use these foil baggies to ship their Mary Jane buds inside.

They work well for containing the odor, but you will have an investment $ in getting different sizes to have what you need. They weigh little to nothing. If you start packaging in cat litter and other such odor eliminator products, you will add some more weight to the package.

Skunk Essence as you will learn over the years fights to escape through eternity. Nothing holds it completely.

Seth, get a vacuum pack bag sealer and the bags that go with them. You may find such equipment at used restaurant supply stores. Otherwise, there is similar equipment for home use available too. When you buy the bag material, be sure to read if the plastic has any gas permeability.

There might also be some used equipment around for grocery stores that vacuum pack or nitrogen pack their meats.

I wipe down the outside of my jars and bottles with H2O2 when they start getting stinky. Not sure if it's transfered via outside contact or permeability through the plastic but it seems to help?

Look into PolyCone Lined Phenolic Caps. I can ship a 4 oz. bottle of pure quill with this lid taped up, put in a plastic bag, and not worry about any complaints of skunk smell.

Would dipping a jar in melted wax help?

I've had good luck by dipping the caps in wax. Then pack in kitty litter in a coffee can with the lid tapped shut. That's with large orders of skunk quill and never had a problem yet. For small orders this might not be practical.

This adds to weight, but I got some SK Backbreaker from Paul that was sealed in a bag full of dirt. I couldnt smell the skunk until I cut the bag open.
