Wild ramps - 01/10/18 12:22 PM

So, I have a large piece of land. It is covered...I mean covered with wild ramps. We eat them as soon as they are ready. I feel like I could sell 200 lbs a year and not put a dent in them. Question is, where can I sell that quantity all at once?

Thanks for any advice

You will have to do some leg work. Try restaurants, don't know if one restaurant would buy 200lbs but you may get a few to buy 5-20lbs. You have to get out there now and get them on board with an order before the ramps even are close to coming up.

Are ramps what we call leeks?

I have heard it called a wild leek as well. We eat em like mad when they come on, my wife pickles them too. I hear they are susceptible to over harvest, but this is a unique situation in that I literally have at least 30 acres of a solid carpet, and then patches where they have spread over the years maybe twenty foot diameter. I am certain that with a little research I could harvest a ton of them sustainably. If anyone knows about sustainable harvest I would be interested in that as well.

My daughter has the same numbers on her place......10's of thousands of'em. I would love to find a steady market for them, but so far have struck out. I've found the odd place that wants a couple good messes of them, but they don't want more, and they don't want to pay s**t for the ones they would buy. There was someone on here 3-4 years (?) ago that showed a literal trunk-load of fresh leeks/ramps they had picked and had sold. I don't remember who it was, but if they were any kind of business person they wouldn't blab who they sell to!!
