Yellow root questions

I've found several good patches of yellow root this spring and am thinking of digging them later. Should I wait and pick the berries I think they are red in June here. Also if I wait until late summer I assume it will weigh out heavier. Used to dig it as a kid but never was happy with getting it clean enough. How is the best way to clean the roots before drying. Thanks.

Hello Kytrapper, I am fairly new to all of this as well but I see that no one has answered your questions. But yes you should wait and dig it in the fall, it will make you more money, because it will dry heavier. I’m not 100% sure on best cleaning methods for roots yet, a lot of roots are different. I know a lot of people clean the majority of there roots in an old washing machine or some have used a cement mixer. Also some just use a garden hose and a screen and spray them and flip them, spray them again and then mix em up and hose em again. Like I mentioned earlier I’m still pretty new to all of this, but I have been learning a ton. That’s about all I can give you, hope it helped!

Kytrapper, I wait until August to dig goldenseal. I clean it by washing it with spray nozzle on the kitchen sink. You don't want it super clean. Just spray off most of the dirt. Don't clean it until the yellow shows.

Dig goldenseal right now! Keep the herb. Wash with pressure washer or high pressure hose. After washing it should look yellow. dry and call me. What you paying 4488? Does anyone buy mullein leaves?

I will pay upper $30's for good clean goldenseal and $8 for the herb. AND I will cover shipping.

I can pay 40.00 on goldenseal root and 9.00 on the tops. Contrary to what a person posted a few threads up, Goldenseal must be very very clean. Buyers no longer want dirt in Goldenseal. Dirty seal will be cheaper by quite a lot of money or may not be sale able. I can use all the Goldenseal and tops any body can produce. I will also pay shipping on the roots and the tops.

Don. you say it has to be very clean for top price so what are your suggestions for cleaning it properly. Thanks Digger

Sorry I didn't answer your question a bit sooner. I have a 1/4 inch hardware screen to wash Goldenseal on. It has sides all the way around and the sides are around 4 inches tall. I throw on to the screen a couple gallon of roots to be washed. All the big clusters need to be broken apart then start washing your root. As you wash you need to keep turning your roots so all sides get washed. Make sure that the smaller clusters all get broken apart also .The most important thing to have is good water pressure and the next most important is to have a good nozzle that can spray a good hard stream of water. Don't set your nozzle on any of the light spray settings. The hose that most people use in their sink, is not a good tool to wash Goldenseal.
