Greasy Fox Fur - 02/25/18 02:02 AM
I have a fox that has stayed greasy near the base of the tail area. The hide is dry but the fur is greasy. How do I remove?

Drumming is the only way I know of to get grease out of the fur on a dry pelt.

It's not a lot of grease but enough to make the fur sticky and noticeable. I don't have a drum, is there any other way?

If its just around the skirt, you could try spraying it with mineral spirits, then sprinkle on some corn meal and brush/rub it in vigorously(be careful not to rip the dry pelt),then shake it out, repeat if necessary.

It'll take a couple days for the mineral spirits to evaporate after so it may still look a little greasy for a day or two.

Borax will also do the job.

With borax how long do I leave it on the pelt?

I do'nt think it really matters but I usually leave it on 5-10 minutes then brush and shake it out. Just make sure it,s all shaken out before shipping.
Saw dust is cheaper and it absorbs the oils/fats Rub it in and then comb it out

I will add to the Borax or Sawdust comb out...
I use a shop vac to remove Borax or Sawdust. Just because it's nearby and handy. Shaking and combing is fine and works. I just use a shop vac & comb.

The air compressor Is the trappers best friend.
You can just about blow all the water out of any wet carcass critters In a few seconds. And It would blow out any borax or saw dust. And It fluffs up the fur when doing It.
