fox hide display question / borax non tan

I skinned and fleshed a racoon a couple years back, rubbed with borax, and then flipped the hide and mounted on poplar wood board for a display in my basement. There has been no slipping of the fur to date that I can tell. It was skin side out for a good while before I did this. My question is, I am midway through the process with a fox right now using the same method, however, I flipped the skin on a wire stretcher to fur side out after drying for two days (much shorter time). I boraxed after fleshing and lightly coated again under the arms before turning fur side out. Does anyone forsee having issues with the hair slipping on the fox following the same procedure I used for the raccoon? I looked through previous posts but didn't see anything on this topic strictly for display purposes /non tanning.

I don't see any problem with your fox if it worked out good with your raccoon.

I see no problems but do have a question. How did you flip the coon ? I would think it would have been hard as a brick ?
I only ask because I have a badger I would like to do the same thing with .

I say “ I turned “ the coon But after letting dry a good long while I should really say I cut down the belly and wrapped around a board then stapled the back. I wasn’t too concerned about the belly as I was hanging it on the wall. Came out better than I expected

If it ever gets wet again, it will slip. But it won't look very good.

^^^^ Bingo. Borax is a preservative not a tan,any moisture/humidity and it will return back to a raw state.

so if already heavily boraxed, am I able to tan or not? The fox is still fur out of the stretcher. What would you guys recommend? Better luck next time?

Yes you can still tan if you choose to do so. I would just let the tannery garment tan it for me,not worth the hassle of rehydrating,pickling,etc etc. for what they would charge to do it.

Someone that knows what they are doing in the tanning process can successfully tan a hide treated the way you have. Someone that tries to do it on his own will likely loose the hide as the Borax has raised the pH of the hide to a level that will cause issues in the pickle and tan. Home tanners typically won't have the tools or time to monitor the hide that is why many craft fur buyers do not like buying hides treated with Borax.

And if you do take it to a tanner, be sure to be upfront with how you treated the hide so they know that there could be issues.
