When sewing up holes in hides?

How do you do it? I'm a coyote caller so will have some bullet holes. I have read to place stitches 1/8" and up to 1/4" apart. I read where one gentleman puts 40 stitches per inch. I use a baseball stitch. Let's hear what you guys have to say. What do the buyers like?

I use dental floss. I put a stitch’s just over an 1/8 apart. Nothing fancy, but I do try to make a nice stitch. Most buyers I have been around don’t care as long as it’s done well. Good luck

First off I like to have what ever the hide is on a stretcher not to tight or to loose then cut off the red rim around the hole then I use nylon thread simular to what a taxidermist uses to sew up capes I use what's called a blood knot then when I'm done I gently rub some borax on the area I just finished up. I hope this helps.

I do mine loose on the board like Allan. My friends a taxidermist and gave me some needles and he uses 6lb black trilene fireline for thread. I'll make my stitches about 1/8 apart just so everything lay out flat and even.

A tip I picked up last year was as Allen said use your stretcher and find a chair with arm rests so stretcher can lay across your lap as you work. Sewing holes takes time and it can make ya sore if not comfortable. Another tip- put a piece of cardboard inside your pelt and pin to the stretcher. Pin the length of your repair to cardboard to keep everything together as you stitch.

If I remember correctly I tie a blood knot make a stitch then wrap the nylon thread around the needle 2-3 times then pull it snug then repeat until done then tie a over hand knot close to your last stitch.
