Tumbling hides

I am in the process of building a 6' fur tumbler to clean hides during season and break a few hides that i decide to tan myself. Can someone give me some pointers on how long to tumble the furs? I plan to use hardwood sawdust or corncob grit for cleaning furs and whole kernel dried corn for breaking hides. Also any pointers on things to include on the build would be appreciated.

I don't think a 6' drum is going to be big enough to break hides

6 foot is small maybe 10 or 12.

I built a six foot tumbler and it breaks hides just fine. Just want to keep the RPM slow so the hides have to drop from the top. Mine runs 16 RPM

If my math works out ill be turning roughly 16 RPMs. Do you have an idea how long it takes to break a hide?

After the skins are tanned and oiled I let them get 80% to 90% dry then in the tumbler, leather side out for about an hour, depending on humidity. Then let them continue to dry. If needed I will run them again until they are dry. If they are tanned properly it does not take much to break them. I use a smaller tumbler - drum to clean the fur to finish.

I made a 4 ft tumbler to clean furs and fluff them up. Mine turns 14 rpm and I use corn cob horse bedding. Really makes them nice and fluffy. Not sure if it would work for breaking hides. I suspect its not big enough for that.

Thank you everyone for the input. I've sent the first batch of coons throughthe tanning process and broke in the tumbler. I'm turning 20 rpms (a little faster than I figured) but within about an hour the hides are coming our nice and soft. The next problem it it burnt up my 1hp motor. I'm looking to increase to a 2 hp motor but keeping thr same output RPMs.

Do you guys use small blocks of wood or ? in the tumblers to break the hides?

I use wood blocks turned round on a lathe when I tumble leather or sheep skins. On fur skins (and you may laugh) I use Grandma's idea on breaking up a wet down filled coat in the dryer and use tennis shoes. I cut the shoes in half with a band saw. Not near the mess of using wood shavings or corn cob grit. I us that in my drum.
