Storing tanned furs long term

Storing tanned furs long term - 10/14/22 03:11 AM

I'm still pretty new to trapping, I'm only able to do it as a hobby. I'm planning to tan all my furs and eventually get into making hats, mittens, etc.

Any advice to long term storage of tanned furs? I'm planning to store in a mouse-proof bin in my basement. Are moth balls or cedar sticks worthwhile?

Thanks for any advice.

If we have more fur than we can handle, we will usually get them all fleshed out and brained, then hung to dry. Once that is done our fur actually does best just hanging up around the house. Maybe put it in a closet with a dehumidifier if you really need to. Otherwise I’d just hang them where air can pass over them

Also, don’t store in basement, it’s moist in basements

Someone told me a cedar box will keep the moths out.

I have been using those large, compressible clothing storage bags. They have a vacuum port on them for removing air and tightly compresses the bag/ contents. I store these (with the tanned fur) in a closet, up on a shelf. I will add we don't have mice in our home! I have kept tanned fur like this for years, until I've had use for them, or enough of one type of species for a project. Gary
