Sewing machines - 03/12/23 09:41 AM

Trapping season is coming to a close here in Jersey. Had a decent year for my first year trapping. I'm hooked. Got 18 coons, over 20 rats, a couple possum, a red fox, a skunk, and a 3-legged black coyote. I have 6 of my coons alum tanned so far. I enjoy making garments as much as I enjoy trapping. It seems to me different types of machines are required for sewing different types of fur. I am most concerned with sewing raccoon. What kind of machine do I need for sewing raccoon? Thanks!

I use a bonis A machine for thin fur and a B machine on thicker fur and sheep skins. Be careful, you will get hooked on sewing too. LOL

I envy you all that can sew, great talent to have!!

I see you are an oyster dealer or fisherman? Do you farm them or "fish " for them in. Hard work it seems from the few shows I've watched and interesting.

Bonis B machine is a good all around machine for pelts like beaver coon wolf otter etc,it will do the job just fine on fox cats too.I use needles of the 12,and 10 size needles on my B machine.
The A machines are commonly called mink machines and are suited to finer furs like mink marten ermine etc. They will take a finer needle.

I have a Bonis B machine and a Techsew 402 to sew fur with. I guess they both have their place but I like the techsew a lot better. [Linked Image]

Are there patterns available for various articles or do you create your own patterns?

My wife has a Singer HD6380 sewing machine. Does anyone know if this is suitable for sewing fur?

I've got a similar question as WIKA. I'd really like to try sewing fur, but the machines mentioned above are out of my price range. Can you use a heavy needle on a traditional sewing machine? Are there any economy sew furring machines out there?

Looks like you can still buy them used, but $1500+. That's why I'm inquiring about econo-options!

Was just looking at a 4452 online, I am curious if they are suitable for a "hobby" seamster?
