Depends what you're fleshing. I made mine narrow, and it works pretty good for case skinned stuff. Not so much for beaver leg holes though. I used a 1/3 diameter of 6". I'm toying with making a separate beam for beaver, just haven't. I can get measurements, but it'll likely be a few days.

Coon boards make great templates for fleshing beams. Here are a few measurements [Linked Image]

6" beam, second from the right, is used 95% of the time. Watched Coon Creek Outdoors YouTube videos.

I like those, but none of them are 6" pipe...what size pipe were they made of? Looks to be at least 18". Love your setup.

Re: Help with PVC beam - 09/08/24 04:46 PM

6" pipe is too small for making "wood" style beams.
12" and up is optimal.

If I had only 6"pvs I would just cut it to length and slide it over a wooden post.

Re: Help with PVC beam - 09/10/24 04:33 PM

Very nice. You did a great job of smoothing it down. And it looks very symmetric
Now for a few hides to flesh to see if you like the taper of the "nose"
I like mine a little more narrow for the first 6-8 inches
But mine are 8+ inches wide

Re: Help with PVC beam - 09/10/24 05:09 PM

Thats what im unsure about id the "nose" cause I fill like its going to be to wide, but i guess Ill find out

I made mine wider it worked good for fleshing around
beaver leg holes, but had a hard time getting coon down on the beam to start fleshing behind ears, so I narrowed the point down, the coon fits good now but
have a hard time with beaver back leg holes

I used a coon board for a template also. When I made mine 10+ years ago, I also made 3 ot 4 other sizes. I quickly decided that I only needed the one. If I trapped beaver, I might make the wider one.

At the time all I have is coon wire strechers, will that work for a template?

Re: Help with PVC beam - 09/16/24 09:16 PM

Give it a measurement and compare to the chart I posted. You may have to zip tie it in the middle to narrow the wire stretcher

Appreciate it, Im goin to try & draw a guide on some paper with the measurements you posted

12-14" pvc is the way to go, if you can find it.

Re: Help with PVC beam - 10/01/24 04:12 PM

@TrapperChris, I finally got my hand on some 10" pipe and tryed my hand at making one not so "fat" at the top. Its not bad but im not really happy with it. I will post a pic as soon as I can.

Re: Help with PVC beam - 10/02/24 11:44 AM

I have different size PVC beams made up that just slide into a stand. Can switch out three different beams depending on what I'm working on. Got the idea from somewhere, not sure now.

Bigger one is great for beaver

You can see the smaller ones in the background up against the wall. Have one that's roughly sized for coyotes, otter, coon. Smaller one that's great for rats, mink, etc.

Re: Help with PVC beam - 10/07/24 01:39 AM

I traced a fox board and a large coon board for the taper i wanted. Used a jigsaw and a flapdisc grinder some final sanding and good to go.

Southern Secret. You won't know till you try it. I bet it'll work out fine for you. Fleshing and stretching your own hides on something you made is great.
I love putting up fur and get great satisfaction in doing it. I hope you do the same.
Show us some put up pics this year when you get the chance

Im going to give it a tray for sure, & Ill no doubt be posting put up pick all tho im still waiting on my building/fur shed to get dropped off

Re: Help with PVC beam - 01/08/25 05:09 PM

I Made similar set up as Rendezvous, all im using is 6 in PVC, because that's all i had at the time, i had traced a Coyote stretcher stencil and cut it out. I use that one 95% of the time as well, notice for beavers its too small, a flatter P.V.C would be ideal, like mentioned 12" or bigger would be nice.

This has worked for me. 12"c900 water pipe. Need to narrow the point to slide legs of smaller hides over.

Nice looking beams. But it seems to me wood is a lot easier to work with.

For those looking for pvc pipe go to some construction or plumbing businesses and ask for ends they have cut off on projects, we got our pipe for free that way.
Well drillers too would have some pieces.

Re: Help with PVC beam - 02/07/25 02:12 PM

I've had good luck using the green PVC. You can use a readily available 6" pipe, cut it in half. Then put that half in boiling water for a minute. It'll soften up and you can flatten it out.
