I try not to start political threads or negative threads, but this is pretty scary. We all know that google already listens to those of us who have "smart phones" but this is a whole new level and actually probably has been going on for quite some time.

It sure is scary, but has been creeping up on us all along. People are welcoming listening devices into their homes with Alexa and Siri and Google Assistant and Cortana, and those companies have recordings of conversations in their homes - all the while they're thinking it' cute to say out loud what you want to add to the grocery list and have Alexa keep track of it. It blows me away. Televisions with voice activated commands are recording the sounds in your homes. Samsung already admitted to having groups of people review those recordings, and to selling them. They say it's only to improve customer experiences.

All listening devices that are activated by a voice command have to be listening 24-7 to "hear" your voice command.

Smart phones also track location. Does anyone here know if a person turns off the right settings on their smart phones, have they really deactivated all of the tracking? I am not familiar with the technology, but I'll bet someone here is.

It is all very scary to me, Idaho. People's willingness to go along quietly is just as scary.

Start leaving the phone at home

In a lot of cases your wife can track your phone to the place you are at the moment you are there.

My wife could do that from the day we got married Had to show her Who was Boss came home every night for 35 years

You have to remove the battery for a phone to stop tracking you.

I haven't used google and don't enable their requests on my phone and now google maps don't give me directions anymore.

I use bing for searchers and mozilla for browsing.

Not exactly sure how not to be tracked today with our modern conveniences. I sure like using them. Wish we could have more privacy while still using.

If those surveys are to be believed, we seem like a bunch of nervous nellies.

The other day my friend and I were talking about this very subject about phones listening to us. The conversation drifted to how supposedly in Oklahoma a cop can cite you for speeding without a radar gun. Without missing a beat, my phone piped up with "here's what I found about Oklahoma..."

If anyone is so bored they feel they have to track me so be it. I spend most of my time alone in the woods or swamp in places.those kind of people wouldn't go. Have fun all you trackers.

Smartphones' locations can still be tracked, even if all location services and GPS have been turned off. A security exploit uses a mix of phone and non-phone information sources to track a device's location, suggesting your location may not be as secure as you thought.

If you remove the battery these things cannot function till turned on.

Kind of same thing happened to my youngest son and his wife.

They were sitting in their living room one night watching tv and diddling around on their phones. His wife mentions that she would really like to get new carpeting in the living room as it getting kinda shabby looking according to her...
minutes later adds started popping up on both their phones about stores with carpeting sales... WTH???

There are parties who would be very interested to hear conversations about valuables in your home, about travel plans and security, about firearm ownership, about voting preferences. Lots of reasons and people with money to pay for data and recordings.
