Hey guys. I’m running 2 coyote lines right now one of which is producing well and one that has been fairly slow. The line that I’ve caught more coyotes on I’ve caught 17 so far but the odd part is, out of that 14 of them are male. This is unusual to me as normally I seem to catch a somewhat balanced ratio of M to F. Also I’ve caught 4 pairs of very big old males that seem to be traveling together and every pair look very similar in color size age etc. In the places I have caught these pairs like this there seems to be no or very little other coyotes around. Seems like at least once a year I catch a pair or two like that but this year more than ever. I have some theories as to why this is but wondering why so many male coyotes? And especially older males? most of them have very yellow worn teeth. I’m sure this means something but I have no idea what to take away from it. Just curious if any of you guys know why there would be such a seeming imbalance?

Might of had mange/parvo go through. Especially if your not getting many pups.

I kind of had the same thing going on here last year. Not pairs but way to many older males and very few pups. It was kind of a tough trapping year for me. I assumed it was some disease that had hit the population.

Most years I catch more females I wish it worked that way on the hogs.

most times i catch a 50/50 ratio as well last year 95% was males about 8 years ago i had about a 90% catch on females talked to a biologist he was shocked to hear of odd catch ratios as most dens are 50/50 or at least 60/40 the only thing we could come up with is low numbers in the area with lots of feed which possibly could produce lots of pups two or three years down the road

I'm certainly not an expert, but when I hear of disproportionate numbers of adults moving vs YOY, it makes me wonder if something significant has displaced them from their home range.

Very interesting guys, thanks for the input. Guess I'm not the only one. I'm starting to wonder if maybe theres no pups or females around because those old males are too territorial and run them off? Another thought I had was that it could possibly have to do with the wolves nearby these zones. Maybe the wolves have ran off most of the coyotes and these old guys are the only ones that have stuck around. Maybe they paired up to have a better chance of defending themselves against the wolves?

had this same situation last year in western KS. Out of the last 30 of the year-- 29 were old males. Some biologists suggest this means they are a declining population due to disease etc. Summer ADC work was with mated pairs. This fall -- to be determined

"talked to a biologist he was shocked to hear of odd catch ratios as most dens are 50/50 or at least 60/40"
I do not agree that the dens run close to 50/50. I have seen them run 50/50 and all he way one sex and everything in between. If the biologist was shocked, he never did any denning or listened to anyone who had.
