I have been freezing pelts as it is getting to where I can't keep up right now. Question? Today I limited out on otter, will it hurt to vacuum seal the otter pelts and freeze, or do I have to worry about singe. It is also 3 weeks out until I can get an appointment to register them.

Don’t leave them in the freezer for months and you should be fine

We normally have to seal otters by April 10, but last year due to the virus, DNR was closed for sealing until about three weeks ago, even tho I wrapped and sealed in plastic bags the finished otter, I've got some freezer burn. Now there talking about another shutdown, so I'll have to hold them again, I don't want the freezer burn, or singed fur, that why I asked about vacuum sealing.

How does a finished pelt get freezer burn? I keep hundreds of finished pelts in my freezer, some a long time, including otter and never seen one freezer burn. I have one left in my freezer right now that I have not tanned yet, that was caught and put up over a year ago and its fine. Not wrapped in anything.

Freezer burn, I don't know other than, the hind feet area is kinda an ugly white and seems wrinkled, I've had some beaver pelts that was finished and held for over a year, and had the same thing, in some areas, the tanners told me that they were freezer burned, and won't not tan as well as they should have.

They must have not been dry if they frost dried white. Tanners are misleading you for sure. Some people in the north actually frost dry skins.I have sent frost dried bears to the tannery(international in Winnipeg) and they tan up softer than the other pelts that were dried inside.

The whole singe thing on otters kinda wigs me out as well...are they ruined if singed, and what exactly does it look like?
