Cwd takes 1.5-2 years to show outward symptoms and kill deer. The "survival rate" you cited is likely an exerpt from a recent Wisconsin DNR study on cwd, in which the survival rate through the winter was reported on. Cwd is a Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies, (meaning it causes microscopic holes to form in the brain). This leads to a gradual cognitive decline, making deer act dumb, thus making infected deer more vulnerable to vehicles, hunters, and increased predation.
The recent study from the Wisconsin department of natural resources that I mentioned is listed on their website and I recommend reading it. Lots of fun information, including how cwd won't start to cause a decrease in the population until the infection rate reaches 29%.
With regards to cwd vs EHD, you are comparing apples to oranges. One kills a lot of deer quickly, one kills the herd over time

It was most likely to have been here for quite some time before they finally came out and announced it. Decades later, the herd is doing just fine. Some areas reported lower numbers after a couple years of people filling 6 tags per year just because the could. Before that it was only one buck tag and and a doe tag if you got drawn by the lottery after paying your 2 bucks for a doe tag application.

This doe was the 6th positive case in Georgia. After she was photographed, the hunter killed her. This was back in late October this year. We are up to 9 positives in 3 counties as of now....scattered across a 14 to 15 mile area. A lot of people make comments when they haven't educated themselves much on available CWD info. Time will tell what CWD is gonna do to whitetails. High prevalence rates are NOT good. And it appears that it is a form of environmental contamination that we ain't getting rid of. Maybe its always been here. Part of the problem with wildlife agencies is they dont know the answers or what to do exactly about CWD....and they're just trying to do something. Its a no win for them. There are currently no known barriers on a biological level that would prevent deer to human transmission. Medical researchers don't know why it hasn't happened.

With regards to cwd vs EHD, you are comparing apples to oranges. One kills a lot of deer quickly, one kills the herd over time This^^^ is accurate info. As for a population decrease becoming noticeable when the prevalence rate of CWD reaches approximately 29%....deer managers have historically used 25% as the rate of deer removal to stabilize a deer population....all mortality factors considered. Go beyond +/- 25% and the population cannot recruit at a level to maintain the population...so it decreases.

We had a stretch here where our deer herds went through something and it was tough on the deer. Maybe not necessarily cwd but it was bad. Dead deer everywhere along my line especially near ponds and streams. Prior to those years I had to romp on the brake many times for crossing deer on the roads while checking traps from farm to farm late at night after work. After that stretch, was hard to even find a track in my trapline sections anywhere let alone have to brake for deer crossing the road. It hit us hard. Had several landowners asking if I’d seen any deer so they could fill their landowner permits, and normally I had i tell for them like yeah I see a buck in this section when I’m running traps, but during that stretch I couldn’t even point them to a fresh track let alone share intel on sightings, except yeah there’s a couple carcasses by your pond in the old pasture. My boys won’t forget all the bones we encountered and used for coyote sets. Still have a tote full for future sets. Herd has since came back but nowhere near what level it was before that. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

The deer herds here have been hammered by EHD and CWD over the last 20 years finding a track is tough finding multiple tracks is very rare. I’ve seen the deer walking in circles that were very thin and full bodied healthy looking deer that were stone cold dead and nothing would eat on the carcass even.
Many counties and the Black Hills Forest are now closed to doe permits it’s easier for me to hunt in MO then to hunt for deer here in SD. I see a lot of CWD issues now impacting MO but the lack of information and pop up deer biologist don’t help matters a lot of bad information might be going around now.
