I made a few beaver snares to play with, The one I liked the best was a washer lock the kind that's bent completely over not the 45 angle one. With 3/32 1x19, loaded it. Made a 10 inch loop and submerged it about 3/4 of the loop. I put mine right under a bridge crossing where the beaver would turn with the angle of the breakwater, I didn't use any scent do to the bubble trail in the melting ice showed its path. Next day had a big beaver waiting for me.

if there are trails and slides I would still set them with footholds as drowning sets and conibears any time! mix it up with food/curiosity lure and castor lure, and they will come.
I found that sometimes we tend overthink it and give them more credit than they deserve. I recently had the same old male beaver step on the same trap two times in a couple of days. First time I only had a toe nail, second time around he was less lucky. So much for a trap shy beaver I thought. if the location and set are good, you will catch beaver.
Nothing wrong with trying snares, but don't give up on other tried and true methods is what I am saying.
Good luck! And let's see some pictures!

Zach, Current wasn't strong. But I would think turning the loop and putting the lock farther around will allow to adjust for faster water.

For wised up beavers, ditch the lure, castor, and bait. Set footholds where there is fresh sign going up the bank. Set 330's only completely submerged where they are hard to see and at underwater hole entrances.
Snares--in deep water set the 10 inch dia.loop half in, half out of the water. In bank runs have the bottom of the loop a little above the ground. Snares are cheap and light. Festoon the area with them. In long, heavily used trails put multiple snares. A good swivel in the cable is a good idea. Find pinch points where a beaver goes under or over a log, between two trees, between two rocks etc.and put a snare there. In current sometimes you can protect a snare by putting guide sticks to funnel the beaver in but stop floating twigs and leaves from snagging on the snare.
Keep in mind beavers can knock a snare down with sticks in their mouth or sliding on their belly, etc. But snares make no noise, so if you reset they won't be spooked. Most beavers pay no attention to snares anyway because they are all the time pushing through vines and tangles.
Good luck!
