Winchester model 70 hands down the best rifle ever made. Wife says the same about her Browning X bolts. Sooooo..........

JMB never designed a turn bolt. Just saying.

Have 3 model 70's.. Two with the mauser style "claw" extractor and a .223 coyote with the push feed bolt. I like them all. Just something about a walnut stocked model 70. What a rifle should be. imo

Model 70

The only thing I like better is when I build a custom Mauser 98. PLUS, that DISCO looking gold trigger ruins their guns IMO.

And I've had to repair hundreds of their safeties since they were not heat treated correctly...back in the 80's.

I have a few older xtr's and they are terrific shooters. If they had them with detachable magazines they would be the only rifles in my gun room.

If Mauser were still alive Winchester would be paying royalties to them the same as our government did on every 1903 Springfield until the WWI broke out. The Browning is actually substantially more different from the Mauser than the Winchester is. That being said I own a couple of left handed stainless classic model 70 with walnut stocks and the only Browning I own is a 10ga auto lol.

Mod 70 is what I was leaning towards

Re: Browning x bolt or Winchester mod 70 - 03/31/18 12:15 AM

And jmb designed just about as many of Winchester rifles as Winchester did. In fact jmb's first design was sold to Winchester and the Browning family took the eight thousand dollars that Winchester gave them for the 1895 hiwall
and built a factory with it. Browning designed most of the Winchester lever actions. Winchester even bought manufacturing rights to Browning designs that were superior to the comparable Winchester model and never put them into production to avoid the costs of retooling.

Oh, and least we forget John Moses Browning designed the 1911ACP, not Sam Colt.

I hear a lot of guys complain about the three-position safety. What don't you like about it?

I have no trouble operating the one on my old 1963 M70.

awkward position with my thumb.have to lift my hand off the rifle to operate it.remington 700 is hard for me also.no problem with the browning.small hands I figure.

I would get on gun broker and try to find a mod 70 that was made in New Haven. Seems like things keep getting cheaper as in cheaply made these days. The ones made in the south might be good, not sure. Never owned a browning. Jmo

Obviously both are great in their own regards. I also own a few of both makes, in magnums and long action clamberings. The stock on the Brownings absolutely beat the tar out of me at the range. This annoyance is not notable in the field though.
For the Winnie, it has no shortcomings, IMO.

I have a browning x-bolt eclipse varmint and I like everything about that gun! It's so accurate and I think the best part is the super feather trigger that browning put in there from the factory. It's the best factory trigger I have ever had

I still have nightmares about the mod 70 XTR that I had. Probably the only gun I have never, at some point, wished I had back that I have sold.
