Saved out 10 of my bigger ones from this season and finally today I split and scraped them, then covered with hardware cloth. They should be dry in 3-4 days.

For reference, that is a 32" wide beaver board they are on.

If you are going to get them tanned at specialty leather, they want the frozen, NOT dried.

Just shipped them way over a 100 tails all fleshed and dry, no calls saying they were not acceptable as dry compared to frozen.
These were all this years tails as well, that does make a difference.
Been using them for years and always shipped them fresh tails compared to frozen tails then worked over, there is a difference in tail texture when waiting to long to finish prepping them.
I believe thats what they are referring to instead not dried, they know right away the difference when dying them as the tails don't take the dye evenly and show blemishes in the tails easier when they have been frozen, which makes sense to me as freezer burns may dry the tails out more in different spots and not evenly.
I would not ship them tails from a storage of a year or more though due to them not being an even color or the tan taking to them evenly either !!

If you do a Google search there are a couple of really good videos that show the easy way to do tails.
I dropped a bunch off at Specialty Leathers last month. Nice people and cool place! They gave me a tour of the facility and explained their operation. I'll be sending another shipment soon.

I run a thin paring knife around the edge in just a half inch and then start filleting from the base down about 4-5" then stick the butt end in a vice and hand pull off the slab. I normally would use channel locks to help pull off the sides but couldn't find them. LOL
After the slab is off I fillet off the bigger pieces of fat and finally use a pull type paint scraper to clean up the rest. I found it was taking me about 8-10 minutes per tail.
