Machinists: REALLY STUCK SNOWBLOWER SHEAR PIN ! - 01/26/21 12:22 AM

What am I doing wrong ????

Broke both shear pins on a 42 inch snowblower for the garden tractor. Got the right side shear pin popped out using a hammer and a nail punch. The left shear pin, however, is completely STUCK !! Pounded away for over 30 minutes, and it has not moved 1 millimeter !!! Got the new shear pin installed , but the left side augers are free spinning because of that broken pin that I can't get out.

Any ideas on how to get that thing out ? The one I was able to remove , is only about an inch in length.

Thanks,

Canvasback

The part thats stuck isn't threaded, it's basically just a little piece of steel rod, right? Lots and lots of heat should do the trick, along with lots of vibration.

Can you drill it and use an easy out like you would a broken bolt ?

Not threaded at all. Just smooth round steel

Not knowing a thing about snow blowers, I'd bet the pin holes in the auger is not lined up with the pin hole in the shaft. You are pounding against the shaft, not the sheared pin in the shaft.

It does not take a large amount of heat to break a stuck pin, it may have got twisted and got hung up while hitting it, if it won't move any more by heating the outside up and then blasting it with a heavy hammer you probably will have to drill it out.

You should start in the middle as best you can with a smaller diameter drill once thru try and drive it out again, should move fairly easily then

Heat and quench with water or penetrating oil can help with stuck pins or bolts. Or you may have to drill it.

drilled mine out
then use soft carriage bolts they shear easy but nothing else breaks and I got 5 pounds of them for a couple dollars when a hardware store was going out of business pound it in give it a whack to bend it so it won't fall back out

Get REAL hot then pour water on it. Are you sure it is not a tapered pin?

I agree may well be a tapered pin.

Spray some Millcroil penetrating oil (if you have it) on and leave sit for a few hours then try pounding out.this oil penetrates to the millionth of a inch.

I work on snowblowers. Make sure hole in shaft is aligned with hole in auger like billcat said. This is most people's problem when they are brought to me with a shear pin that can't be removed. If these are lined up correctly and it still won't drive out, there is a burr of metal where it sheared. Drill out slightly on each side just enough to remove burr. It will then tap out. Don't try to drill completely until you try this

A proper shear pin should drill very easy, they are soft so they shear. don't replace with a bolt. sounds like it may have twisted a bit and not lined up with auger shaft holes.

Called Machinist neighbor up today. Came over 30 minutes ago. Within 10 minutes , he had that stuck pin pounded out and the new one installed and all tightened up.

Charges $65.00 an hour,,,

Guess how much the bill was.............

Apparently, the Arthritis in my hands did not allow for a hard enough strike with the hammer ! frown Several HARD hits with the hammer he was using, popped that old shear pin right out !

Next time drill another hole and put a shear bolt in it. It worked for me.
