Re: Medical question - 03/25/21 08:47 PM

Had an exam at age 69. Small non-cancerous polyps removed. Just routine. In about three years had bowel problems. Another exam showed Stage 1 cancer. A surgeon removed about an 8" section of my colon two years ago. I had been told at age 69 that I would never need another exam. Thank God I got one three years later. Had an ultrasound check of my stomach area. Darn if a tumor wasn't growing on my right kidney, so out it came also.

Glad I was checked out because I had two cancers growing inside me and had no idea of their presence.

You need to go buy some hand lotion. They gotta be real chapped from all your hand wringing. Then we can get back to hand wringing about polyps.

Re: Medical question - 03/25/21 09:01 PM

I don't want this to sounds harsh.. But you need to get checked out, especially if you had pre cancer cells in the last check up. You can make payments if need be. This is nothing to fool around with. If you choose not too worry about it, then the next step is to start saving that 10,000 for your final expenses. I am guessing you can get some help or even get it done for next to nothing.. You just have to check into it.

Re: Medical question - 03/25/21 09:36 PM

From someone with a medical background, it would probably be wise to get another scope done. Even though the polyps were noncancerous, it's the polyps that more often than not develope into colon cancer.

I am most certainly not saying you have cancer or are going to develope cancer, but you have a risk factor with your history of polyps. As others have said, file for Iowa Medicaid. Your health, especially as one ages, is everything.

Re: Medical question - 03/25/21 11:04 PM

We dont have to pay for any of that stuff here.
We go see the family doc,he asks if we have any preference of which specialist to see then he sets it up for you.
We can apply for travel grant to pay to go out of town, also.

Re: Medical question - 03/25/21 11:11 PM

Ask your doctor for a colaguard test. You send in a stool sample to get tested. Should be much cheaper and it's better than nothing.
Posted By: Boco

Re: Medical question - 03/25/21 11:11 PM

There is also an occult blood test available.Just pick up the kit and send in a stool sample. It is a way of screening for colon cancer but not as good as a scope.

Re: Medical question - 03/26/21 12:35 AM

Cologard is a good way to go. I call it "Crap-in-a-Box". it is a heckuva lot cheaper than the colonoscopy, and you don't have to drink that devil pee beforehand.

Re: Medical question - 03/26/21 12:54 AM

I thought the cologuard commercial says you can't use it if you have a history of pulips.
Coonman, talk to you gi about a cash price out the door.
Typically, If you had employer insurance the colonoscopy would be free until they remove polyps. Once they remove polyps it turns from routine to outpatient surgery and that benefit kicks in.

Harbor Freight has those handheld inspection cameras on a flexible shaft About as thick as a ink pen..... $29.95 When done looking for polyps you can find the crack in your trucks exhaust manifold. Almost pays for itself, I would say. .

Re: Medical question - 07/15/21 07:57 PM

Doesn't Iowa offer some sort of state run health care or have a medical assistance program? Check with your department of human services. They should be able to help.

You are a good example of who the government should be helping first instead of giving free medical care for illegal immigrants. This is what bothers me most about this present administration.

Re: Medical question - 07/15/21 08:01 PM

All polyps are non cancerous at first. I get an exam in November because my last exam found cancer and a surgeon removed 8” of my colon. Was caught early. I had no symptoms. Had two cancer surgeries in six weeks.

Colon cancer can slip up on you. Hope you are OK. Ask your doctor if there are any university studies.

If they find something they want to watch, or later remove, they can put a tattoo inside your colon. The tattoo is visible from the inside and outside of the colon. I watched the monitor when the gastro doctor did mine. He put a mark above and below the problem spot to guide the surgeon. When I later had a kidney removed, that surgeon said he noticed the tattoos marking the previous site of my cancer.

Re: Medical question - 07/15/21 08:10 PM

Boco, don't be rich with your advice on not paying, if your working your paying for your service's, through your taxes, you leave that out a lot in your examples !!

Coonman, you need another regular exam thats the bottom line, you have to decide how badly you wish to have it, to warn you of any thing coming down the tube, so to speak !

Lots of things happen when we age, some we can get notice with early warning, scanning is one of these tools, if your playing the lottery with your body and already know about non-cancerous stuff, it's a short throw to cancerous really in the scheme of the previous scan.

Your gamble, you wish to be around longer or have the doctor give you an estimate how long !

Re: Medical question - 07/16/21 02:05 AM

You cam probably qualify for Medicaid check with your state. Also look at Obama plans.
Yes colonoscopies are billed as a preventive exam. Usually it turns into an outpatient procedure IF they remove polyps.
In all my years in health insurance I don't ever remember seeing a colonoscopy for more than 5k. If memory serves me right they are around 3500 and that's with removal.

Re: Medical question - 07/16/21 05:35 AM

Dave, contact an local insurance agent that specializes in health insurance! They will explain all your options; what you qualify for (medicaid, obamacare, private carrier), level of coverages, premium costs, etc. They will explain what is covered, who you can see, level of your personal payment liability, hada, hada, hada. AND THEY DON'T CHARGE YOU FOR THE SERVICE ... FREE!

The current government administration has provided excess financial help for insurance costs during the pandemic compared to past years based on total income. Bad things are: this financial help won't exist for ever. Insurance periods renew every year so you got to go thru the process every years. There are only 5 months left in this year's insurance cycle. Get everything done before the end of the year for one deductable ... Scope, knees, and whatever else ails ya.

As always though, you won't act on any advise offered by anyone.

I had the wind talkers decipher this and this is what they came up with;

When I had this done, they say almost all been 50 and older have polyps. Mine are not cancerous, but I watched them take them out on a TV screen. They may get worse but if I pay with no insurance, they may charge me the max price. There's no agreement on price with the insurance company. There's no way I can afford this. I can't get any help from Medicaid or anything because I make $1100 to $1200 per month gross. I'm not sure what can be done, and they won't take payments. I say cash or insurance and they say you will have blood in stool if bad. I have no symptoms, but men at the factory younger age dead from cancer. I can think of several right off the top of my head who refused colonoscopies until it was too late and they died. I remember hearing them say that colon exams were worse years ago and that guys wouldn't go in and it was common cancer at age 50 and over. I'm far past that at 61.

The Injuns just submitted their invoice for this translation;
$49,765.

Dave, I was having problems with my right knee recently, so I went to have it checked out. I'm sure it's not as bad as you have described yours, but for the time being, the doctor gave me a cortisone shot and I couldn't believe what a difference that made. The doctor told me he doubts that's going to be the long term remedy, but it sure made my knee feel better. The shot might be something you could check in to. For sure its way cheaper than a replacement.

According to a 2014 clinical study, about 13% of results from Cologuard were false positives and 8% were false negatives. If you have a positive result, your doctor will recommend following up with a colonoscopy test.
