Know your flat rate boxes

Know your flat rate boxes - 04/09/21 06:47 PM

With shipping going up all of the time I find it handy to keep a few of every size and shape flat rate box on hand, sometimes it’s the difference between paying more for a bigger box or even worse paying for a second box. I had to ship 100 mags to Guam I tried standard large flat rate boxes but the dead space caused the need for a extra box. If I used the large/long flat rate “game” box I did not need the extra box then.

It comes down to a matter of shape and inches at times the same #4 traps that fill a large square FR box will fit into the medium long FR box saving you 6-7 dollars in doing so. The regional A and B boxes also come in the square/ long options.

Yes learned this quite a while ago, it's also prudent to tape them heavily for shipping, on these boxes the box is a set rate weight does not matter then, tape away it's better that way then arrival at destination with parts and product missing.

I don't care how it's advertised, employees think that if it can be thrown 12 feet its going that way !!

Yeah, tape it like its getting tossed out of a train goin 90mph.

Also sometimes cheaper not to use flat rate

I bought some of the fiberglass tape recently it’s not what it was before quality wise the stuff broke rather easy, I tried to make a handle for a cooler and it kept breaking.

I do a lot of USPS shipping and hardly ever use FR boxes. The engineer who designed them was brilliant- they are just small enough that most items wont fit in and heaven forbid, if they do you cant pad the item. The customer doesnt care if the item is padded, its my neck if item gets broken- they just want cheaper. And like someone said earlier regular Priority is many times cheaper. The prices on them are what I think are crazy but hey, if they work for whatever your shipping- do it.

very few of the post offices will have a regional A & B boxes but they are one of the best deals going

you can put 500 rounds 308 brass in a Regional A

also pack every box like they are going to throw it as far and as hard as they can , because they are.

I have known a few unloaders , if they can get a hand on it they will be throwing it

I sent a region A box to AK it was cheaper then the flat rate price it’s a nice option, if you sign up for click and ship you can pick your best option at the end before you print your label. Even if you pick the weight option you can pick the flat rate at the end from the list.

and line the box with another layer of cardboard when shipping traps.

I have been using the regional boxes more and more the past few years. The post office does not want us to know about them because we must order them online, even though they are free.

The Regional boxes can only be shipped on line. They are not an option over the counter, even if it is a Regional box.

The only down side of the Regional boxes is the weight limit. Region A is 15 pounds. Region B is 20 pounds.

Flat rate boxes are a 70 pound limit, regardless of size or zip code.

I bought some coil spring traps from a guy awhile back. He had set them and wired the jaws so they stayed open. You can fit more in a box when they lay flat.
