Bobcat foot holds

Bobcat foot holds - 09/25/21 02:34 PM

If you could buy any trap for bobcats that wouldn’t tear up a fox what would you get? I was looking at the mb550, but open to suggestions

The mb550 or if you’ve got the money for them k9 extreme jr.

Re: Bobcat foot holds - 09/25/21 02:52 PM

That k9 extreme junior is a great looking trap! Would you go 4 coil or is 2 coil enough

Re: Bobcat foot holds - 09/25/21 03:48 PM

If you don’t have a lot of freeze thaw conditions to crust your trap over then I’d say 2 coil for the fox but if you’ve got to get through a layer of semi frozen grass or dirt then the 4 coils may be a bigger help

Re: Bobcat foot holds - 09/25/21 03:56 PM

2 coil 550 is all I use in any weather and they work fine. If your trap freezes I don't care how many springs you have it ain't gonna work.

2 coiled MB Alpha

Another vote for MB 550. I’ve caught a ton on Jakes over the years

2 coil MB 550 offset

Re: Bobcat foot holds - 09/25/21 05:10 PM

It really seems like you should just get 2 coiled mb550

Our season isn't open yet here in Wisconsin, and no I wasn't one of the testers of the trap.

Re: Bobcat foot holds - 09/25/21 05:34 PM

If money is no problem than mb550 is a great trap.

But what about #2 double long springs?

Way cheaper.

Cats and fox dont fight a trap hard and smaller traps work well no need for 4 coil. We have big cats out west up to mid 30 lbs and number 2 and 3 work fine in fox country # 2 will work awesome.

Re: Bobcat foot holds - 09/25/21 08:10 PM

Thanks I appreciate it, I’d like to finally be able to bag my first cat. I’ve called a couple and had close calls trapping but never have gotten one. I figured on buying a Wyoming license and giving it a try. I see them on the way to work from Idaho and em figured my chances would be better

Anybody see the one in the duke square jaw #2. Forgot I even had those.

Re: Bobcat foot holds - 09/25/21 10:56 PM

We run into some big cats in this area and I have watched a big tom pull the jaws out of a number 2 Northwoods. This surprised me. I have held cats in #2's. But in the snow here I tend to like a #3 for cats but it is a little big for fox IMO.

I run MB 550s two and four coiled. Four coiled is probably unnecessary, but if nothing else, they provide a little extra holding power when the cat hits the end of the chain.

Some of those western cats get big and have big feet. IMO you ned a 6 inch jaw spread. Or at least it’s desirable. You want fast to. Faster the better

Re: Bobcat foot holds - 09/26/21 12:30 AM

All you need for fox is a 1 1/2 duke coil spring. You need the right tools for the job. Been grizzly bears killed with a 22 long rifle but i dont want to try it

Re: Bobcat foot holds - 09/26/21 12:45 AM

MB 550 offset 2 coil is pretty much all my wife and I use. We have never failed to fill our bobcat tags. They lock up very well and are easy on feet. They have also held cougars we have caught incidental to bobcat trapping (would rather they didn't hold these but they always have). I use MB 450 offset 2 coiled when targeting fox.

Bridger #3 offset jaws . I like the bigger target area . Some cats have very large feet

Make sure Idaho allows NR bobcat trapping or Wyoming will not allow you to do it, reciprocity. If you're in Idaho that is.

#3 Bridgers and MB 550s work well for us, offsets with 4 coils mostly. We have some big bobcats as stated above, our biggest caught was 39# and dried at 46 inches long.

If they hold a lion, they'll hold a bobbie just fine.

Re: Bobcat foot holds - 09/27/21 09:20 PM

I caught a big tom lion in a #2 victor longspring in 78 or 79. Had the trap tied to the root of some oak brush or scrub oak whatever you want to call it. The root broke instead of the trap. We ran that cat with hounds the next day. Trap was on two outside toes. I dont use 2 longsprings for bobcats anymore either. I hate seeing cat tracks and no spots

Re: Bobcat foot holds - 09/29/21 08:23 PM

Always used 3's here when using footholds for cats.
Have held more than a few in 1.5 ls set for marten back in the day.
Cats have knobby toes and dont fight a trap like a canine.

Caught and held 100's of cats in duke 1 1/2 2 coils. Just keep good springs in them.

Interesting. I don't plan to set any 1 1/2's for my bobcat season next month though

In Cen\Tx I use Vic 1 3\4s for fox and
bobs.

Re: Bobcat foot holds - 11/30/22 10:21 AM

#3's will hold fox

I usually make a species specific set. If I set on fox sign I use a 1 1/2. Miss more cats with a 1 1/2 though than you will with a 3. So if I set a cedar thicket where I found some pack rat nests I use a #3.

I like your bobcat posts. I have an idea what you mean by pack rat nest, but am not sure

I use a KB 5.5, caught several lions, it has 4 coils that are #1 coil spring equlivalent so you can set them over your knee, had several Bobcats by a hind leg no pullouts, coyotes stay caught! Really like these traps sad they aren't made anymore@#^!

Re: Bobcat foot holds - 12/17/22 07:10 PM

I used MB550’s and 450’s 2 coils and have caught cats and fox in both. I prefer regular jaws vs offsets, offsets slip too much. I don’t care about foot damage too much because they all meet the same demise, but no sense in it if I can avoid it. Held cats by full pad and 1 toe in both traps. They all work. Both are fairly decent on fox as well.

Good traps indeed. Many of mine are 650s, but offset.

Unless y’all have a different species of fox, a 650 would be tough on fox. Sometimes a 550 is.
