Strange lung issues

Strange lung issues - 11/22/12 01:01 AM

Since May I have been suffering with bad lungs (I do not smoke or anything like that). My wheezing is so bad I havnt had an actual good night's rest in months. My air ways are constricted and some days even sitting or walking to another room will exhaust me. Most of the time I feel like I'm breathing through a straw. I had a himalayan salt inhaler that helped a few weeks and almost removed this completely but now it's back and worse than ever. Last night felt like someone laid bricks on my chest and I have needed 2 nebulizer treatments today. The only thing I can trace this to is swimming in the river (that very next day I had this when I woke up and it aint been gone since).
I may have athsma, copd, lung infection, allergies?
I have ruled athsma out now as I can still go out and do activities (I actually clear up when I go out for walks, town or check traps).

Another theory is our carpet. Since carpets tend to hold in allergens, and I had a dog with massive mange who used to lay around in he living room (he died 2 weeks ago but im still sick).
I was on antiboitics until I ran out, and they did help some, so I believe this may be an infection.

I just really wish I could sleep again smirk

You could have mold in your home.

Mould is the first thing that came to my mind especially when you said it clears up some when you go outside.

Have had any moisture problems in your home? I would check the bathroom and bedroom closets for starters they are bad places for mould to grow.

Do you have an attic in your house?
Sometimes you can get black mold to build up on the plywood.
Caused usually by the bathroom fan leaking or water leaks.
Sounds like mold somewhere to me. Nothing to mess around with.

Do you have a crawl space. Could be mold in insulation or animals in crawl space.
May need a home inspection to get to the bottom of it.

1) See a doctor. Breathing issues are nothing to trifle with. My wife just spent 3 days in the hospital with pneumonia in one lung that started with symptoms that came and went.

2) Definitely wouldn't rule out mold or other irritants/allergens. Could be as simple as a new detergent or soap.

At age 58, I suddenly began getting symptoms similar to the OPs and my doctor said I had developed 'allergic asthma'. This is a restriction in the lungs in which exposure to things that usually just made me sneeze or clear my throat begins to cause difficulty breathing. The reaction is that when the passageways in the lungs get irritated, they constrict.

For me, it started when the cedars went to pollen this spring and went on for a couple months. I had a couple nights where I was having a lot of difficulty and considered getting myself to a hospital. After ruling out an infection, my doc prescribed an inhaler (albuterol sulphate) that I am to use when it gets critical. Works great, provides immediate relief. A one month supply has lasted several months and I still have quite a bit left.

I'm willing to bet that carpet in your home has more allergens in it than you think. Definitely sounds like something in the house doing it. Until you get it figured out, maybe spend more time outside or with the house opened up to air it out. Fresh air seems to be the real ticket here. Couldn't hurt to see a doctor to make sure though. Even allergies can become something worse if left too long.

I think I would go camping for a few days and see if my symptoms go away

You have to go see a physician period. Telling you what home remedies work for a bit is fine, but they are not working. You can try to get away for a few days to see if that would help, but if you trace this back to swimming in a river, that would seem to be the base cause.

What a doctor will do from my experience with my dad and fiance is two things. For my dad, he waited around until he almost died, and they did a biopsy and put him on steroids which did cure him. For my fiance, it was an inhaler, and again that is steroids.
You have not mentioned mucous production if that is associated as a factor which would be the case with allergies or other pneumo conditions. The point is, the best solution is to see a doctor, inform them what worked and what did not and you will go from there. I am not diagnosing anything, but it sounds like a viral pneumonia, but you do not mention a cough to clear out your lungs, so that points to closed air passages, meaning swelling.
Again go see a doctor and get some further testing to track down if it is a bug, an allergy or another condition which will be treated with an inhaler.
