how do u guys make stakes for coon?i am going on my 2 year coon trapping and was wanting to know how to make coon stakes?

Rip some pallet wood. It's usually hardwood. Make sure to double check for nails or you'll be buying a new sawblade.

If you don't wanna do that....get some pine stakes from Lowes. They work fine...just ditch the ones with bad knots.

i would just spend extra and get rebar....eventually with wood...youll have a bunch of toothpicks

I use hardwood....broke one this year (stomping it in)....and had none chewed.

Besides...wood hold much better in the mud than rebar...and they're lighter too!

I still like cable stakes, but I've used rebar too.

I just picked up some leftover pieces off of the side of a deck my dad had built for somebody. They were like 1.5x1.5 in and around 38in long or so. I couldnt even get some of them outa the mud.

idk i'v had trouble with rebar being pumped out by coon there 2ft long so i switched to berkshires

i work for a manufacturing co that w orks with all types of metal
i can dig 1/2" rod out of the scrap hopper at random lengths and cut to my need then i pick up some washers and weld em up easy as pie.

i use 1-2 inch on coon also and never had one leave with a stake. water or land. my stakes are 28 and 30 inch. double stake if he is near a bank where he can get above the stake.

could i make my own wood stakes for coon?

i use wood stakes to hold all rat beaver coon traps will even use them them on my coyote line in sand i use 1x2 12" to 18" long

this was my 2nd year of trapping too and for the little bit of coon trappin i did i used wire to tie my traps to logs about 8 ft, or so, make sure theyre solid, and they worked great the coon only went about 10-15 feet and since tey could move it kept them from doing any chewing to their foot.

Trapper12 ADC has it right with wooden stakes but make sure they are made out of a hard wood please . I almost last my dog to a Kids trap years ago , not that you would not chack your traps every day , but someone did not . I found her a week latter just skin and bones , she ok now but if you use wood, and I think it's great, just make sourer you anchored it better then I can spell .I know you have very little money for trapping and that's ok I still do'nt have much money for trapping and one of the ways you can save money is wooden stakes ,just make them good and strong ,and if yoa need help you send a poast here I am sure some one will help yoa

you guys are lucky, the creeks here are bedrock bottom, i have to use a big rock. but the rock i use is big enough to keep him there but will give when the coon makes those first to or three hard pulls.

how long does it take for u to find the animal?

usually it doesnt take long at all to find them, providing you used a large drag. I did have one last year though that got the drag in the water and floated on it doen teh creek 50 yrs before it go hung up. All in all i think drags are teh wasy to go, I might be able to get a pic ofa rebar steak for you though.

do u guys think a 12 year old like me can find the coon in a trap that has a drag on it

from all that poundin on the bolt on the end does the weld not just break of?

i weld my stakes with washers and bolts and havent had one break yet!
you need to weld em good though, not just tack em
i weld mine top and bottom.

they call those things on top nuts, not bolts

do u think i could use drags?

You could use drags but make sure your in thick brushy cover with a drag that is heavy enough it won't move it very far. Also drags with prongs work better because they catch on stuff and leave a better trail to follow.

I stake my traps 99% of the time because I hate having my traps somewhere other than I put them. Looking for you catch is time wasted. I use rebar stakes with a nut welded on top. As long as a coon can't climb up on something they shouldn't pull your stake. I've had welds break but very uncommon and they were all old stakes and most were trying to get them out of the frozen ground with a pry bar.

you would have no problem finding them on drags providing your drags are: Large, Heavy, Strong, Long.
I mostly used logs about 5-6 feet long, and about 3-4 inches in diameter, ones with some forks and stuff are better. Wire them good onto your trap chain, lay them near you set and your good to go.

By the way , those are nuts welded top and bottom on that steak and i welded 36 of tehm this summer and none of them broke.

I use drags on every coon trap I own because it's quick and simple. I make sure the traps have long chains about 3-5 feet work good or I will use cable with mid swivel. Then I look for a stick or log that I can't break (if I can't break it a coon wont either) the longer the better and thicker is a plus. I wire it to the end of the chain at about the middle of the stick. I will leave the limbs still on it in most cases. Wire it good and tight and sit it near the set. Saves the original site and they don't get far. Sometimes it's hard to find one or two and it takes a little bit of patience. They can go up trees and it sucks to look for hours for a coon and find an empty trap 2 feet from the original set lol. Other than that it's easy sailing and very cheap. Just make sure you use your head on where you use them. Right beside an open field is not a good choice as they can go a pretty good distance with nothing to get caught on. i hope this helps. ~Dan~

dan is exactly right, by using drags for coon you can be just as effective as if you were using steaks, but you carrying load will be much lighter.
Make sure you have a good large sharp pair of pliers too, suz some of the heavier gage wire is really tuff. I use a pair of Stanley Linemans pliers. Theyre stong and theyre painted yellow so its hard to lose them.
