I've been told by NAFA you can't overstretch a beaver. Next time you pull a beaver really tight, check the middle of the pelt where the grader is paying the most attention. The middle never does get drum tight, and not as tight as most of the other types of pelts. In my own experience it's been proven to me that stretching beaver to the next size when possible definitely brings me more money. No one will ever convince me otherwise. I've seen pelts of guys who don't stretch their beaver tight and some are a wrinkled up mess after they've been off the boards for a while.

I have seen beaver over stretched and the fur is very thin on the back and if the pelt is wrinkled it was took off board to early or put up wrong. Under-stretched beaver will wrinkle the same way that under-dry beaver will. I've stretched my beaver to the max for years (but only when I've had to to get into the next possible size) and I, the local fur buyers, and apparently NAFA have never seen the leather or fur get weakened by tight stretching. My grades have always been very good, when they haven't had bites. Like I posted above, the middle half of the beaver never get's very tight anyway, it's mostly the outside edge. I think if the fur was very thin on the back it was that way before they were ever stretched. But I also have no experience with southern beaver. Maybe they are different.

Trying to compare northern beaver with southern beaver Goldy, lol. Our's have thinner leather than your's for obvious reason's so over stretching them does make them thin. As was said on hoops i like for mine to have some slack in them as they will be tight as banjo strings on them once they have dried out, won't be any 'crinkling' in them.

Paul, I got a top lot for a western beaver this year. I guess he came from the western part of my county, or one of the ones I caught when I went two counties west of here in the delta....LOL
I put mine on wood, and I like to staple them down. The downside is that now it's started costing me about thirty-five to forty cents per beaver for staples.
Jackie. We know you don't stretch beaver anymore. U 2 lazy! LOL
