Has anybody tried this? How well does it work, any suggestion on what to do or not to do?

my bro and i use brains to tan almost all of your critters we keep. its not too difficult and we highly recommend it to first time tanners.

however ya have to be careful with all the new diseases out there. we use to not wear gloves when we did it, but now its just a safety precaution.

all animals have enough brains to tan its own hide. however if you do not believe this, we also mix some of em with some hog brains because they will tan almost anything.

we split our brains in 3 batches so each critter gets 3 applications and stretchings. seems to work for us

If you are going to make buckskin, i.e. hair off, one of the more difficult, but necessary things to do is to remove the
grain from the dehaired side of the skin.
Adios,

Just a little note: you can get the same effect of braintanning without the actual brains, by substituting them with many different types of oils. That's the key to tanning, the oils, and a product such as Neatsfoot oil(sp) can trick anyone into thinking it is "braintan". Of course it takes a little more time and effort making your "real" brain soltion, but it's nice to keep with traditions. Another maricle product for slipping the hair is the same "Saniflush" toilet bowl crystals, that alot of trappers already have for cleaning traps, can't beat it.

Tried the brain tan thing over the weekend. i guess it turned out ok. We did 2 muskrats. The hides still feel oily, will this dry after a few days. Also, we took a 3/16 steel cable, stretched tight and work the hide side over the cable to soften the hide. How much "elbow grease" should you put into this and how do you know when you have worked the hide enough? We finished by smoking the hide as shown in the directions I had. Any input or pics out there of the finished product would be appreciated. Thanks for all the comments, I will try to get a pic of what we ended up with.
