I wish we had turkey up here. But I suppose as much as I want to hunt turkey, and deer, and elk, you guys want to hunt Dall Sheep, and Moose, and Caribou. Good Luck to all hunting!

Lol so true billy. I would trade 20 turkey hunts for a moose hunt and all the others you listed. Our season has been open for a little less than month. Ive been out numerous times and had jakes in close range, but waiting for a big tom. This snow has screwed with them lately, but now its warming up and going again. Im gonna start hunting them harder. Ive seen some dandy toms lately, just not when i have my crossbow lol. It always works that way.

LOL Possum. I know what you mean. For example on occasion I will go grouse hunting, and not see a thing. Then the next day I will be driving my car to work and there will be one right there in the middle of the road pecking the gravel.

Actually funny story about Ptarmigan(similar to grouse) and a town AK, goes like this:
Quote:
The Town of Chicken was once the mining hub for the Fortymile district. In 1886, ten years before the Klondike Gold Rush, gold was discovered on Franklin Creek and the community of Chicken was founded. In the late 1800's, early miners traveled far in search of gold. Food was sometimes scarce, but a particular area near the South Fork of the 40-Mile River was abundant in Ptarmigan, now the state bird which bears a resemblance to a chicken. The miners kept themselves alive with the help of the Ptarmigan (if you consider being eaten as helping.)

As the story goes, the miners wanted to name the town 'Ptarmigan' after the bird which is common in the area, and had helped them through the hard times. Unfortunately, people couldn't agree on how to spell it! They also didn't want to be ridiculed for misspelling the town name. Finally they settled with the easier name of Chicken. The name stuck and so has the community, despite an up-and-down history of mining in the Fortymile district.

This is a true story and is on the city's web page(You can see they have smartened up a bit). But I digress; back to turkeys! Just out of curiosity, having never hunted turkey, how do you typically hunt them? I imagine they are similar to other birds, kind of like our ptarmigan.

It depends on the day, where the birds are, and how much time ya got. I like to stalk them but nothin beats callin in an old tom. Most mornings ill find the roost and set up about 50 yds away so theyll flydown at my decoys. That works great but i dont always have time to get to the good spots especially before school. So i hunt close to town during the week. There i will get right up to the propertyline because the birds roost on the side i dont have permission on. Most of the time i can pull them over by calling but sometimes they come on my side of the fence a ways away. Thats when stalking comes in. There are ditches i can get in and basically crawl in to get to them. Ive done this many times. Or on the weekends on my way home ill see some where i can hunt. Ill stop and get in the hedge row and get close enough to them. I pass up a lot of birds because i want a big tom. If it aient big, i let it go. I really enjoy the hunt and time out there more than anything

That is awesome! I completely agree with you, the time out in the woods is worth it, especially is you have the excuse of hunting, trapping or fishing.

Went out this morning. I got a jake, but I'm not going to complain at all. After that today, there is so many turkey hunters it is very difficult to get one, so I figured why not. We had a couple more mature gobblers sound off but they all quit. I had a coyote barking and howling, it was pretty close too. It was a nice hunt, anyone else go?

I went out too. Congrats on the jake Pa k9 trapper. I had a nice tom hang up at 70 yards. He was coming in to the decoys when a hen popped up to our left. He chose her over the decoys and followed her instead lol. Oh well maybe next time

Went out last Saturday and called one. Got it to gobble like he had a thousand hens coming to him. When we went to get ready to shoot he stopped. I don't know if he got spooked or got disinterested. Can't wait for Saturday to come!!!

We had one come in this morning full strut all the way. As soon as he saw the jake decoy with a hen he started to charge. I took the shot at 12 yards and dropped him. He had 2 beards, one that was 11 1/4 and one that was 8 1/4. I’ve been thinking about getting him mounted lol. Anybody else been out?

Was out this mornin' and heard two gobble, but it seems that with the longer winter they aren't mating yet, maybe?

I live off the Blue Ridge Parkway in a condo developmemt. Three gobblers come to the my back door every sunny day. If I have not put sunflower seeds out for them, they peck on the sunroom glass windows for attention. Their beards are dragging the ground. Sort of takes the excitememt out of turkey hunting when you can catch one in a landing net.
