I guess people with chains just go slow. I don't know how slow though

4x4. Easy on brakes and no sudden tap on the gas pedal. Four wheel drive does not equate to four wheel stop.

4Wheel drive and good tires are what you need when it rains on 2 inch thick icy roads. I was coming back from beaver trapping and it started to rain and all of a sudden something came into my mirror, it was my snow machine and trailer gliding sideways. Took me several hours white knuckles to get home. It was that way last week and caused a big pile up, some people were stuck in their vehicles for hours before getting going. rain on ice no fun!

Not everyone has that option. But it's the best one if you do have the choice...

Stay home = Lose a day's pay.

If you decide to try to go to work and wreck on the way... You still lose a day's pay, possibly have a damaged vehicle/towing fee, injury that could cause you to miss more work, medical bills... And potentially death.

And being dead will make you miss a lot of work.

Call in. Stay home. Tend the fire. It's the cheapest option.

I have been wanting to post a question about this. I have ~600lbs in the back of my ram 1500. Too much? Too little? Just right?

See what the load tables are for your tires. Most tires are run at too high a pressure for good traction. A high pressure is good for mileage. Check your tires cold is the recommendation. You can pick up 4 or 5 pounds driving half an hour

Very simple, when the roads turn to ice you put on the chains.

snow isn't a big deal. when it thaws and refreezes into ice its a bit tricky. when its freezing rain, park. don't drive in southern California when its raining. worst ice is fog freezing on the road. you can do anything you want and your still not going anyplace but in the ditch or something.

I have worked for the Dept. of Roads for 15 years. One of the biggest problems are people using their cruise control. Shut off your CRUISE CONTROL.
