Just curious, IYO, in this market what states have the best quality coyotes.

Shorthair if your thinking about a western coyote trapping adventure, focus your efforts on areas without gman predator control. Some counties they are pretty serious about it. Spring denning, aerial gunning, m-44's on private property. Big catchs won't be made the coyote numbers just aint there. Coyotes start getting shiney any place west of hwy 81 and north of I70. Best of the best are within a hundred miles of the Canadian border. Month of DEC they are pretty prime.

Interesting. I never thought beyond what states allow out of stater's to trap. Right now it's nothing more than long term planning. Post retirement, about 6 years.

Yotes vary from area to area within most States and mange comes and goes over time so no blanket answer can be defined by a State border or even a 50 mile area that could be mange infected or off poor quality~ I get yotes in one place that are good colors and drive to cat country 50 miles away and they are a lot darker and were very mangy just a couple of years ago.
Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

Me and my brother talked doing the same thing after retiring. I got a few more years till retirement. Hopefully the yotes are still worth something when I get there.

I think 50 miles can make a difference in any fur bearer. to start looking for coyotes though, imo, west of hwy 81 and north of I 70 will get someone headed the right direction. in the end after you pour over maps, check regs and license fees, check public access, make some phone calls to ranchers or trappers in the general area, you just have to load up and go. ks, ne, n.d. wy, have all produced some dandys for me. have at times had my but handed back to me also. Been flooded out on the Missouri river, blizzards shut everything down, mange, had vehicle trouble. some things just happen. load up and go. most of the time things work out. be adaptable. 2nd 3rd 4th trips you know what to expect, where to go, have made a few friends. First though you have to load up and just go do it.

More than just trapping I want to see that country. I'd love to see those western cats too! Me too. I want to trap it and hunt it. I have seen North and South Dakota and Eastern Montana. I am steadily building gear and Lord willing I'll be chasing critters up there in the next year or two.
