Just wondering if anyone has ever had a coyote break #2 American chain?
I am making up a drag and will use #3 American chain but just curious if that has happened.

Use about 10' and I can't see a coyote breaking that chain or for that matter any decent chain.

I have 10 feet of whatever #2 chain I had at the time and have never had a problem. That said I have a shock spring that use to connect the drag chain to my regular chain, or chained super stake, so there is flex and less stress on the chain.
Also, in my terrain coyotes always seem to get to brush and wrap up so there isn’t much opportunity to slam hard into the chain like they would if I hard staked with 10 ft of chain. 20 feet across the burn circle could generate some energy!
Fox do get hung up in grass and sod, I’m using saber tooth drags or picker point drags from Doug66 and fox don’t move them more than a few feet but a 10 pound red couldn’t break #2 chain on a bet.

Whats the standard on length? I hear from some that only make the chain as long as u want the critter to climb a tree. Some say 10'. If the chains are for targeting cats what's best?
Sorry to hijack the thread.

Basically the chain length can be the same for 'cats as for coyotes.I use 10'on my drags and they work fine, don't worry about breakage unless you're in wolf country as previously stated. The old timers always preached 6' of chain on coyote and 'cat traps but I had too many take off on me,never lost one but sometimes spent way too much time looking for them.Longer chain put a end to it.If your using drags to trap along 2-tracks with the idea that the drag will help the animal get away from the road and hide himself you'll find its a crap shoot no matter what the chain length.

The length of the chain will determines how the drag stays on the ground. 2 short of a chain will have the drag bouncing.
I myself would rather stake solid. I just don't want to spend the time looking. But there are situations where a drag Is useful.

This is a freedom brand drag, I use 10ft of 3 or usually #5 just because of the weight. I use 99% drags and if I'm by a road the sabertooth is the only drag I use.

Ken no standard, to each his own since I pre-hook along logging roads I use a 1 lb drag often and only want 5-6' chain. I don't know anyone who wants to carry more steel around than necessary PLUS I don't have time to track anything anywhere.

Ken Ken I put all cat traps on drags and yes some go up but not bad here lot of limbs on trees here.i use like stated 10ft.or more. For other considerations #3chain will help drag stay on the ground on hard frozen ground helps with bouncing frozen ground also which is most of the time here when trapping fur.
