I havent started using drags yet but probably will due to some awesome sign in some areas that is too close to public eye. I have heard using a short piece of heavy chain close to the drag helps to keep the drag down as well.

That's a good point. Just make sure It can't get hung up on the drag.

MB #2 chain $.65 a foot, MB #3 chain $.75 a foot at Minnesota Trapline. I figure for an additional $1.00 (10 feet of chain) it is pretty cheap insurance.

I was just wondering if anyone has ever had #2 chain break from coyotes.

10 feet of #2 American chain works for drags if they are good well designed drags. Never had #2 American break or fail for yotes.

Is there anything wrong with using a shorter length of chain? I see 10' mentioned pretty often but would 6' of chain work, I guess what I would like to know is why 10'? Not trying to hijack the thread but seemed like the right place to ask.
Thanks

The more chain gives you more weight and keeps the drag from bouncing. If you get a bouncing drag It's not going to hook up.

sure you could use shorter than 10' but why handicap yourself?? if anything I would go longer by a foot or three than shorter. If I ALWAYS trapped in areas with a lot of entanglement I could shorten up the length but even then I'm not going to.

The longer the chain the less distance they'll go before they tangle. Ten foot is the minimum for me, plus whats attached to the trap.
