Hunting pastor using animal caller mistaken for coyote, fatally shot http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/02/21/hun...tally-shot.html A hunter in North Carolina who was using an electronic animal caller was fatally shot by man with an AR-15 who said he mistook the sounds for coyotes roaming near his home, police and relatives said. Michael Seth Marsh, 26, was killed late Monday in a wooded area in Taylorsville, about 60 miles northwest of Charlotte, as he was hunting coyotes with a 12-gauge shotgun, a rifle and an electronic coyote call, the Taylorsville Times reports. Marsh, who served as the pastor of Russell Gap Baptist Church, was shot several times in the chest with an AR-15 by a man who told police he heard coyotes screaming nearby and believed the animals had trapped something in a tree. The man, whose identity was not released because he was not immediately charged, said he then fired two shots at the brown and gray movement in the trees. The shooter later called police after he realized he had shot the hunter and not a wild animal. Marsh was rushed to a nearby hospital, but he could not be saved. Marsh is survived by his wife, Katy, and two children, Braelynn and Isaac.

You notice that the news article made a point out of saying he was shot with an AR 15. Do you think they would have mentioned anything had he been shot with a bolt action Remington? Sad tragedy that should never have happened.

Sad tragedy that should never have happened. So you feel they should selectively withhold information to suit your political agenda? Too many morons already running around with AR 15's, 30 round magazines and bump stocks? Don't like the facts so just whine about them? Typical.

Yes they do and people are often held responsible for the negligence that caused the accident.
This is not about property rights.

So why include an irrelevant fact to bring politics into it. If he had cut this guy in half with a blast from a single shot breakover 12 ga the guy would be just as dead... But we have to include the evil black rifle so it can be the focus... Not the carelessness of the man pulling the trigger. Was the preacher black? Might as well toss that in while we're at it. Mike

There has been quite a bit of speculation as to the circumstances since this news broke about the possibility of one or the other trespassing. The following quote was posted on an NC hunting forum by a man who knew the folks involved: I knew Seth very well. A close friend, a great father, a hard worker and an all around stand up guy. He worked for the DOT during the day, for me in the evenings and pastored his church all to provide for his children. He was using my fox pro. Part of me can’t help feeling guilt for letting him borrow it. He was hunting on land he had leased behind his parents house. He had hunted yotes numerous times in that very spot in the last month. The landowner is the shooters dad. I guess no one will know what really transpired but I pray the authorities get to the bottom of it. Just wanted to give some more context before any more assumptions are made. Please say a prayer for his wife and children ages 1 and 5. Very sad situation on both sides of the fence.

So serious question here..
Can the pastors wife sue the guy who pulled the trigger?
She should stay home and do more cooking like Babe Winkelmans wife did, and let her husband have some peace and quiet.

Can the pastors wife sue the guy who pulled the trigger? I would say yes she could. Should she? That's a whole 'nother debate. Mike

My guess is he (shooter) doesn't have a pot to .... in or a window to throw it out of. Hopefully he (pastor) had a decent life insurance policy.

If the pastor had leased the property, sounds like the owners son didnt even belong back there. Not sure how that works in a lease agreement tho.The shooter should lose all rights to ever own a gun again in my opinion.Id think he didnt mean to shoot the guy but he did.Its too late now.I was raised like most probably were,to never ever shoot until you know positively what your shooting at.

Pass-thru I’m not picking a fight, but MnMan makes a good point. The media uses anything they can. NEVER LET A CRISIS GO TO WASTE. For example: That’s why they say a “teenager is shot by cops” when it’s a 18 year old man (Ferguson,MO), or a White/Hispanic (George Zimmerman) in Florida

I've thought about the possibility of this happening for years...Coyote vocalizations and an anxious person acting without good visual I.D. of what the assumed target actually is...Unfortunate situation.

Mike What is debatable about it? Perhaps being a Christian and the wife of a minister she might decide to heed the teachings in the NT concerning lawsuits... Again, her choice. Mike

Don't they typically kill several people turkey hunting a year in big populated turkey states such as Missouri? And from what I've heard, the largest shot that can be used in MO is #4. You got to be pretty close to someone to kill them with #4 shot.
We had an idiot out west in SD near a NWR that holds a lot of Can geese during the winter kill someone with a high-powered rifle. The victim was in one of those giant Can geese decoy blinds. Numbnuts put a round through it at multiple hundreds of yards. Somehow, I think the guy wasn't convicted of manslaughter but his family lost a big civil case...

Shooter is an idiot. You don't shoot at sounds.
Ar15 and what the victim did for a living was added for effect.
