I was taught that the ph scale is exponential in nature. 7 being neutral and above that is a base, and below that is an acid. A PH OF 5 would be 10 times more acidic than a ph of 6 and a ph of 9 would be 10 time more basic than a ph of 8.

I am having trouble wrapping my mind around a ph of 6 being 10 times more acidic than one of 7 because 7 is neither basic nor acidic, and would represent nothing in the realms of base or acid. You have to start with something in order to multiply by 10. 10 x 0 is nothing.

Any intelligent thoughts on this?

Try to imagine the immense pondering, and the type of genius it took to come up with this question, that, in my history, has never been asked before .

pH is based on a logrythmic scale. ( pH = -Log of Hydrogen ion ) 7 is neutral or a 1x, 6pH is 10x more acidic than 7pH, 5pH is 100x more acidic than 7pH and 4pH is 1000x more acidic than 7ph and so on. It is really pretty simple.

That is the point of my question. 6 cannot be 10 times more acidic than 7, as 7 is neither acidic nor is it basic.

6.99999999999999999 is just about 10 times more basic than 6. I believe the problem doesn't lie in the multiplying by zero, but by understanding zero itself.
