I am having trouble articulating why I feel that a ph of 6 is not 10 times that of 7, which is neutral, despite the great info that has been served up.

at pH of 7 the conc.of hydrogen+ ions and OH- ions are about the same. That’s neutral. It’s all about having more of one or the other. It’s not 0 at 7 for any concentration.

The term Neutral does not mean zero. It means an equilibrium. Say for a riven volume you have as many black as you have white ( crap this sounds racist ) Apples and oranges then. You have 50 apples and 50 oranges in the bucket at 7
At 6 you have 100 apples to 50 oranges.
Ignore the fact that both apples and oranges have acid in them.
Instead of the apples you can throw bars of soap into the bucket to make it look more realistic.

pH shows the concentration of hydrogen ions (OH- or H+)

at a ph of 5, there is a H+ concentration of 10^-5 moles = 0.00001

the -log(10^-5) = 5......5 is a whole lot easier to write than -log(10^-5) (which is almost impossible to type)

at a pH of 4 - the H+ concentration of 10^-4 = .0001

the -log(10^-4) = 4

there is a 10x difference between .0001 and .00001

which just so happens to be a difference of the -log function....of 1

If you are measuring in Kelvin you don't have to worry about it because we would all dead anyway long before it reaches zero!

Don't think of it being "ten times more acidic". The level between what we call acid and what we call alkaline is numerically arbitrary, it just uses the value of pure water. It's only our naming system that uses water as the border line. If we used a light acid like boric acid (pH = 5.2)as the border line, we would consider water a base. The 10X factor is only used to translate a complex number into a simple one, where really just measuring the H-ion content.
