That is a loaded question, again it is geographically dependent. A teacher in NYC cannot pay the bills on the same salary as a teacher in Alabama. I would say that a teacher's salary should be enough that they can pay all their bills including a newer car, without having to worry. But again the individual person is responsible for managing their own money, one person may be more responsible than another and some will always have problems paying their bills due to poor management practices. WV median salary is ~$43k. Cost of living is ~5% lower than the national average. Given that info, whats a good salary?

Muskrat nice jingo.
I don't believe we are saying we hate teachers. We are talking salaries and like every profession we don't get what we feel we deserve. But I would never walk off my job and leave the business hanging.
Some teachers got the attitude they should be the highest paid profession in the community and I don't agree with that. Yes they are important but they choose thier occupation.
They receive a annual pay for 9 months worth of work and compared to most people their benefit package is great. They also above thier salary get paid for extra activities like sports coaching etc.
Plus even if they suck at thier job they can't be done away with under thier tenured status.
They don't have it that bad. It's nothing personal on them its just comparing them to other professions. They make better than law enforcement in my area working 12 months of the year. Yep. Average salary of a police officer is less than average salary of a teacher. My best friend is one of the states district fisheries biologist and barely makes over $40k.

I figure any answer I give would be able to be turned around. if 43 is the midlevel pay then I would surely agree the starting pay is low even for your area but still not enough info to make an educated estimate. As I said, a teacher should be able to pay the bills and have a decent newer car without breaking a sweat.

The ignorance is not understanding that each district and each state is different, while your teachers might not be paid well, there are others that are very well paid and don't deserve that much when they keep begging for more money. I don't know about you but I don't make half as much a year as some of our teachers do, like I said, I have a direct inside knowledge of the local district system here. Get off your high horse and realize not everything is the same everywhere. Ever been to West Virginia? I have lived there and spend a whole bunch time there and I know what most little towns look like. You really think these teachers are "well paid"? I doubt it. Teachers are the one profession that I have no problem seeing get a raise, they do more than most people ever will for the development of kids and prepare them for a good future.

They don't break a sweat. Yes it's stressful sometimes but no teacher has callused hands or sore back. Are you kidding me? Do you deal with a 100+ kids in a day and all the problems that go along with it? Most people wouldnt last as as teacher. Hard work isnt always measured on sore backs and callused hands. Did you home school your kids and prepare them for college? Most of us dont, we rely on someone else to do that. And I will gladly pay a good salary to the person who is spending more time with my child each day than I am.

Corn is same price as the 80's. Is education more important than eating? Farmers are market driven to improve efficiency and yeild. A government cartel? Not so much.

Im born and raised in WV. Product of the great public school system here. Almost failed out of my first year of college because I was grossly unprepared. Are there some really good teachers, absolutely. Are there some really terrible one, yup. Does that mean they deserve 60k across the board, no way. Not to mention, where is all this money going to come from? WV has no money as it is.

It’s getting pretty ridiculous here. I don’t know what they think they should be paid. They should take away each days salary that they spend protesting, to pay all the parents back for daycare bills they had to put out. Not to mention all of the kids who probably haven’t had a meal in days since school is the only place they get it. Yep, all for the children. Consider in the fact that they work 9 months out of a year, the salary ain’t too shabby. If it were up to me, I’d have fired em all. My wife taught High school ALGEBRA for 28 years. On average she saw 210- 230 students a DAY. (7 class periods) . When it came time to grade homework and or test / exams she would grade papers until 8;30- 10 every night. Plus it would also take her most of the weekend to enter grades into the computer. NOW before you mouth off about how much they make and the number of days lock yourself in a room that is designed for 20 students but has 32 kids sitting crammed in there. TEACHING ALGEBRA that everyone hates and doesn't want to learn. For 6 hours a day. I bet you would ask for a raise no matter what you got paid or you would quit at lunch on the first day !!!! Now with that said you can find lazy people in every profession.

I was raised in a family run business .. my father prepared me for the real world . School taught me nothing about money credit and paying bills. I now go my teachers houses and fix there junk.

They knew before getting the job how much they make . Want more money ? Get a new job that pays more. They don't work all year . They get summers off and one (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) of a pension. There suppose to be teachers cause they love kids teaching and there job Don't know about WV but around here they haven't gotten a decent raise in so long the cost of living has left them behind. PLUS what ticks most of them off is the "sorry" teachers get promoted to central office because they suck at teaching. Central office gets raises that will curl your hair. The school system gets a budget from the state and they MUST spend it or it gets cut the next year. I know this because I retired from a system that does it. They hide the superintendents and all his minions salary and raises they get every year........ Local schools here spend money on sports like they are the patriots. IT IS SICKEING . Indoor batting cages, turf on football fields, but a teacher needs supplies for the classroom and they don't have the funds !!!!

I can only speak my opinion on my local school. Some teachers deserve a raise, some need to be fired.
