I was wondering if anyone grows cucumbers so they will climb up A frame wire trellis. You can buy them I have the material to make them I would use sheep fencing to form an A frame structure about 4 feet high and maybe 3 feet wide.

The question is what are the pros and cons. I don't have a lot of area so that is why I'm considering them to climb instead of spread out on ground.

Thanks

Oh yes, very nice way to grow them, especially with limited space.

Fence lines, trees, bushes. They will climb anything.

Just get them started up. Actually fun to do that way.

Thanks I wasn't sure if they would do worth a darn growing up like that. Thanks again.

I use old cattle and hog panels. Works very well.

You sometimes need to start them up with ties at first but once the first tendrils wrap, it's up up and away. I alwYs grew them leaning about 45 degrees and up to 10 feet of rise. You could stand underneath the 45 and pick them as they grew they would hang down beneath the mesh.

Yep, stake one end of a cattle/hog panel and bend it into an inverted U and stake the other end and plant a cuke on each corner. Makes a nice trellis and they are easy to pick.

I just stand a hog panel up and stake each end and the middle. Plant a row of cukes on each side of the panel and let them climb.

Wow! That is what I will do this year. Thanks for the ideas with hog panels and it may be way easier when picking them. Half the time you can't find them on the ground any way.

Ha ha ha, I didn’t know you could grow them on the ground. My grandma always had them growing up a fence so that’s what I’ve always done.

If you trellis them, you'll have nice, straight cukes. You can also run a cable horizontal about 6 feet up and then grow them up bailer twine droppers spaced about 2' apart

Just happy to be here.

Here's an idea what I was describing, they were just babies in this pic though.

yotetrapper30 >>>> That is exactly what I will do. That actually will save me more room then make a U or A frame type structure.

So how far apart do you put your plants and could I put another row/fence in front of that one like in your picture like 2 feet away or so??

I use my tomato cages for my cucumbers. Have a few made up around 5 to 6 foot tall. But my 52" tomato cages work great. Once in awhile a vine will start to wander off but all I do is pick it up and turn it back towards the cage.. They climb just fine and make a nice bush. I make my tomato cages from cattle panels. Super strong. Last forever. No post needed.

If you can walk down a 24 inch walkway....go for it.

Great ideas I appreciate them and will use your information. I could go a little wider then 2 feet but I don't have a lot of room. Really looking forward to having them climb this year.

I would imagine some have some of their gardens planted in the south? I got 3 feet or more of snow in my garden. LOL

Snowy, Dad used to grow several acres of production cukes. IIRC they would plant on poly, put a stake every few feet, and run strings. I know they ran at least two strings maybe three. Believe they put the first string low enough for the plants to grab or I guess the Mexicans would "help" the plant up on the string . Most years he made gooood money on just 4 acres. And I could be wrong, but the main reason for stringing them was to keep that yellow/white spot where the cuke lays on the ground from being there (aesthetics).

I do mine in tomato cages as well. Keeps them off of the ground and makes them better for pickling. I plant about every 3feet, but it's rather crowded.
