I like the square metal flesher with the wood handle. Sharpen one edge and leave the other side dull. All the supply houses have them for 7-8 bucks. It also works like a champ for going over coon or beaver right after you board them, you won't believe how much liquid grease you can get off of them. The problem with the new ones is the curvature of the blade. The new ones are curved too much. New scraper on the left, old on the right. [img:gal:3535ad7233af41fa]https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2018/04/full-353-412301-s1.jpg[/img You can't get as good of a "grip" on the pelt while you're scraping down with the new ones. It wants to "slide off" with that angle. And on top of that, the new ones come sharpened. The old ones weren't. IMO, you don't need a sharp blade to scrape a 'rat. I'd like to see someone market the old scrapers, or at least point me to a dealer that is selling the older style. Bet a little heat and a vise could fix that.

I've fleshed them on the boards with a hog scraper, but I much prefer to do them on the beam with whatever dull edged fleshing knife I have. No, I don't overflesh them, and it's real quick.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

WTA convention about 45 years ago Carence Behling made these and I bought it from him, the handle can get cold. I've used both types shown here, but this is the one I prefer. Only difference is that mine has a wooden handle. You can get these at most trapping supply places. I got mine from either MN Trapline Products or Cumberlands. Both great places to deal with.

I use to have one like that and It worked good. I just like a square corner better for getting In that arm pit area. But both will do the job.

No lie. I use an old soup can that I cut the top band off with a can opener.

Sounds like most of you are over fleshing your rats. I would think over fleshing would be dictated by how much pressure applied during fleshing rather than the size of fleshing tool.

The Beav has always been sensitive about the size of his tool.

Most of that left over fat Is absorbed Into the skin. That makes the hide more pliable so you don't get that dry crinkly sound when It's graded. And a Over fleshed hide turns In to a over dried hide. And that reduces the weight of that hide. And rats are graded for weight. And cold dried hides turn out a lot better that hides dried In a heated environment. If your rat hides are still on the forms after 3 days they've been there to long.
