Pretty bad had to cut it off up high the quick is showing ....I cleaned it up good and have a sock covering it now for protection .... Should I apply any salve to the wound or let it heal naturally ?

Had it happen to my dog a couple times. I took him to the vet to get it cut and they told me won't hurt if they lick it or anything. Had bandage for a.day then let him go. He did have antibiotics though.

Wish I had more time to trap....

Mine split his at the base and they yanked it with pliers. Bled like a stuck pig. He wasnt bothered by it anymore though.

My blue Heeler cut her pad on one toe in half this week. I know it had to hurt as she limped for a couple of days. Held her down and rubbed some polysporin under it. Seems to be fairing well now.

Mine broke her nail at the base about a month ago. It bled for a while but I left it on and she licked it until it fell off. Couldn't hurt to put some hydrogen peroxide or bleach on it, but she'll take care of it.

I can't imagine taking a dog to the vet for something like that . I don't go to the doctor myself for something like that . if there isn't stitches for them to pick at with their teeth them licking it is the best thing for any wound . I've seen farm dogs heel some horrible wounds on horses pigs , and cows over the years just by licking the wounds a couple times a day ,keeping it clean . it's funny to watch a horse stand for a blue healer to clean its wound when any other time it would try to kick that same dogs head off when it gets close to its feet .

I trimmed a dogs nail too close and the blood spurted with each heart beat. Applied corn starch to make a scab.

Had another dog cut her pad. Vet used stainless wire stitches.

Black nails are harder to judge than white nails when trimming.
