You might be better off chasing down old Trapper World, FFG AND Hunter Trader Trapper mags, there were quite a few articles by some of the greats. The articles back then left alot to be desired as you had to read between the lines, it was like reading a foreign language. Not all English is the same and there was a lot of assumed knowledge. Onr article sticks out about him trapping the marshes of the great lakes, his face experienced wind burn and frost bite. He had a young indian boy working with him. He rigged his rat trap pans triggers to fire on a push or pull: which would indicate he was baiting the pans. His articles were always near his ads fro personnel lessons. The old books are hard to find, people did not have money for books back then, times were tough. Henpecked.

When I first started to look I found some Libraries had a copy. If you check around you can find those locations and probably by working through your local library, you could borrow it and read it.

:)I have all of several John Ehn's stuff. All were signed by John in 1976. I'm 86 yrs. old now and did some corresponding with John back in the early 1970's. I bought his material from his granddaughter as she handled his affairs in 1976. John was born in 1897.

Mchewk: Sorry buddy... sold my lure business and Agreed not to disclose the mformula. Nor can I disclose buyer's name.

The Ehn material was quite crude. All mimeographed on letter-size paper - one side only. Price years ago at $5 to $25 at a time when Five bucks was a lot of money. But info was about impossible to find that had any value.

Would you care to share some wisdom, it does not have to be about trapping. There are so many life skills that ave been lost over time. I spent 40 hours drive to AZ with Brad Rendell back in 93, I enjoyed the talking more than the trapping. If not that OK also, just know you made a difference. You never know what or who can pop up. I turned 50 in Iraq OIFII 2004/2005: I was on a conference cal with War Fighters tat I had taught years before, it kinda nice hearing guys say "whats that old bxxxxd doing here, I thought he was dead" "Hey Grnapa, stayout of my way". Ii t shook the local up see older guy in uniform. Any way thanks for the great reading from your books. Henpecked.

No problem, trapping is a hobby, 27 years/ over 50 countries, in the Navy/Army, that's an addiction. There is no difference between the two. Its all about problem solving skill sets. I think trapping helped me stay focused and took the edge off.

Garold.
Sent you a private mail. I used to love your lures on the fox line.
Bought and learned from all of your books. Also learned from your articles.
Thank you for all the good education. Your fox and coyote books really shined. I became a better trapper after reading those.

I had the pleasure of meeting Garold Weiland at one of the NTA Western Conventions, I think it was the one in Miles City.

I will agree with the other comments, Garold's books when they came out showed state of the art methods. They were and still are some of the best information put out on the market. Garold had a way of explaining what was important and left out things that just slowed you down or wasn't needed. He stressed fast simple sets over a lot of area.

When I was 18 years old in 1983 I took personal instructions from Stan Kohnert, of Lecenter, MN. He had taken personal instructions from Garold some years earlier. He stressed fast simple sets, gang setting and setting as many locations as possible. I could see Garold's influence on what Stan taught me. Garold certainly did a lot to help many trappers improve their methods, with his books and personal instructions.

I like the old wolfer books. John Mast and A.R Hardings Books are easier to come buy. I have read everyone they have out. George Goode and John Ehn's books would be TOP of my list to find!
