I raised one 10 years ago until he was 6 months old and let him go in a town that no hunting is allowed. Probably one of the coolest animals I ever fooled with, now I have a local state wildlife rehibiltator that ask me to volunteer to raise a orphan. The one I raised before mother got ran over in the road in front of the house. Very intelligent animals

I have raise several, we have one that is 20 years old. For several years she would come around every once in awhile, now she sticks around and comes to the door when she is hungry. For many years, she had triplets.

We did when I was young my dad always had orphans of some sort dropped off at our place by local G&P wardens. Fawns were very cool. When they got older they were super tame does especially the Bucks would get a little edgy during rut but does we're always great to be around.
We had one do that everyone knew in town, the old ladies would feed it out their back door. It disappeared one year and I always wondered if it got shot or hit by a car. It was never afraid of anyone would come like a friendly dog if you called it.
Fawns were the best though.
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Lots of fun, they like to suck on your ear lobes. Don't forget to worm them.

There was a fellow in Norfolk VA who lived with one in a mobile home. Had a sand box in a room where it would go to the bathroom.

A friend of mine did. Put a high fence around the yard and collard it. They have some great stories. Unfortunately some half a moron shot it in their yard deering gun season.

That's the only problem around here with all the poachers I have to take them to the one town where there is no hunting or some guy would just shoot them. The kids live them though

Really cool....

Good thing we all don’t raise fawns and bring them to no hunting areas what would we have to hunt during deer season...
Just joking but I’ve notice that us hunters may raise a fawn and drop him in an area where no hunting is allowed...
What’s the difference if another hunter harvest the fawn you raised or it’s a wild fawn that grows up in the wild and we harvest that deer?

Just curious that’s all...

Thought I was a good trapper until I started trapping coyotes......
Thought I was a good bowhunter until I targeted mature bucks....

We raised one when the boys were little. Very cool pet. She would constantly lick your skin, apparently for the salt. She would play in the yard with the kids just like a dog. She stayed behind house in a big block of trees. When she heard the house door, she would come running bleating her head off. Was wanting her bottle of milk. That fall, she contracted EHD and I had to put her down. My bst pet ever.

Interesting question. Here at my place other than red squirrels if an animal is in the yard it will not be harmed, yet I start hunting and trapping 100 yards or so out into the bush.

The only one I raised before this one was so tame that when he a saw a human he'd run to them instead of run away so that's the reasoning for taking him to the no hunting area, if you could keep them fairly wild I'd turn that back anymore but that's just not the case. In a perfect world the mother wouldn't be killed and I wouldn't be raising it. But this guy may have wished he'd been left for coyote bait after spending 6 months with my kids. Lol

Just go to show you that hunters aren't the blood lust, rage machines that some want to make us out to be. Most of us appreciate what nature provides so that all though we take from it we also want to nurture it.

For you guys that have raised them- did you learn anything about them that might have made you a better hunter?

Tweed in my case no. But not a fawn. I had a very large dry doe around the place. At least I never saw her with fawns. Just showed up in the yard one day and pretty much stayed. Wolf pressure maybe?
Anyway, I would be working in the sheds and look up not 5 feet away she would be standing watching. Sometimes walking around the corner of a building if nearly walk into her. The doe really liked the Mohican and would follow her like a puppy. She was very near to hand feeding the doe. Really something to watch when the Mohican worked around the yard that doe almost seemed to keep guard. The doe was always rewarded with fresh hosta leaves when her buddy was here.
Like above, the big doe was poached off my private very heavily posted drive in. Guy bragged about it where he won the big doe contest that year. 168 lbs dressed. Another reason I think she was always dry. Stood right in the road he said. Jerks.

Just be careful raising and releasing a buck fawn. A buck with no fear of humans can be a deadly critter during the rut. We never go into the deer pen at my family's zoo during the rut without some kind of personal protection.

Yea the last one I raised got pretty rough when he started getting his buttons, but for 5 years he'd stay around the same area and let kids take pics with him and pet but during the rut he was a totally different animal, he finally chased a doe outside town limits and was shot by a legal hunter

My mother raised a fawn in her large fenced in back yard. My brother had found it during wheat harvest and it's mother had been hit on the road near where they were cutting wheat. Mom kept her until after she lost her spots and it was the most tame little thing ya ever wanted to see. Then one day the phone company came out to do some work at mom's house and about 30 minutes later our local game warden showed up asking about a pet deer. Apparently one of the phone company workers had called him and told him about her. He confiscated the deer and fined my mother $500 for having her. Broke my mother's heart to see him load up her deer and haul it off. Same year the warden ticketed a lady at the local machine shop that had raised a baby fox that her workers had found out back of the shop. It stayed in the machine shop and used a litter box just like a cat and was tame as could be. She got a $500 fine as well.
