After a gong show spring due to quad breakdown and only being able to kinda run my baits when I had family around I ended it on a good note tonight. Quad got fixed Monday and I hunted Monday night at a different bait and only saw a small blonde.
Tonight walking into this bait I kicked off a small black and around 6 had a small blonde come in. 730 the wind died right down and not 15 minutes now later another small black cane running in but you could hear another bear off to the left of the bait. After 5 minutes or so the small one ran off and this guy came marching in! I knew he was a shooter instantly so I focused on calming myself and letting him come into the barrel. He got next to the barrel and was slightly quartering to me and I gave him one with the trusty 338 win mag which put him nose first into the dirt and he never moved!!!
I know they hunt them over bait barrels but to me there doesn't seem to be much hunting involved. More like Buffet shooting. Looks like a nice bear though, glad you enjoyed yourself.
BBarnes and Pilgrim22, The type of land/terrain/country ...whatever you want to call it Dictates if a spot and stalk hunt is even feasible. By your finger pointing question we can tell you've Never hunted Bear, let alone in a Wooded environment.

Everyone who makes statements like this has one thing in common: They have never done it an know very little to nothing about it.

I knew someone who knows absolutely nothing about me would have some kind of remark to make. If you would have read the post I did congratulate him on his bear hunt. Finger pointing--- Look in the mirror.
Had a really close call with this Giant Boone & Crockett bear in May. Check out the vid. I'm heading to Theriau Lake Saskatchewan for next week hunting for a blonde bear. Flying out of Saskatoon.

No you didn't. You made a smart aleck, condescending remark. This place would be a lot more tolerable if people would keep comments like that to themselves.

I honestly find it hard to believe that there are fellow trapper/hunters here on T-man that would bust a guy's chops about bear baiting.
If you don't want to hunt bears that way, then don't do it. But don't give those who choose to do so a hard time about it. Heck, why not just go ahead and make a donation to HSUS or PETA. Those groups agree with you guys.
I have lived in SK my entire life and hunt more then most. I have seen two bears when I haven’t been hunting them. Hunting with bait is the only realistic chance you get not to mention all the hard work involved with running baits.

I agree with Pete. I suspect the two negative commenters set strictly blind sets with no bait (if they even trap) and most likely don't even need decoys for geese hunting. I get some flak for hunting wolves on snowmobile from time to time because apparently the wolves don't have a "sporting chance" or we're not on an even playing field. EXACTLY!! I'm not out there for fun or to grow as a person. I'm out there to get a job done and put as many wolves on stretchers as I can. Nice bear Sask hunter, that's one animal that I haven't gotten yet.

I don't support either one of those groups. But as long as people continue to post these kinds of photos of hunting over bait on the world wide web I'm sure both of those group you mentioned will gladly add them to their arsenal to continue their fight to take away the hunting you all like so well. And if the Moderators fill that I am in the wrong they are welcome to pm me and remove me from the site.
I don't care what I post because I don't care what those groups think. Im a hunter and proud of it, if somebody doesn't like that then that's their problem not mine.

Nice bear Sask! I'm like you in all my travels hunting ,trapping, fishing ,quadding and everything else It is rare to see a bear once a year.
BBarnes I'll quote you
Somebody wrote
"I wouldn't hunt the squirrel Dog, just hunt the squirrels with a dog"
Your response
This made me laugh
"Seems like there's one that pops up in every thread! I was just trying to find out information "
So your ok with hunting animals with a dog but not baiting? There are all kinds of methods people use for hunting, any thing that has been deemed legal I'm not sure why it should not be used.
Please read the second line you posted and explain to everyone what that means.
I wish we could bait here, you literally can get as many trail cam pics of bear as u do deer but if it wasn't for using dogs we'd be lucky to kill a few

Nice Bear for sure.any rubs on the back section so you can make a rug? Now do plan on eating him? when I went last year the guides said no bear meat in spring.eating it in camp or take home. we hunted over bait in upper Ft McMurray, Alberta. The only way to hunt in the Boreal forest is bait. You cant stalk, its impossible. .
That's correct. it was may 9th thru the 15th. i thought you could eat it ,but as I remember they just started to purge the plug so would it be more toxic since they haven't really been eating and drinking? any thoughts you Northern guys?
I have hunted bears all over North American both spring and fall. Never heard of a bear you couldn't eat because it was too early in the spring, etc.. Definitely some are better than others, but if you kill a bear on bait, they have been eating for a week at least, they will eat grass or whatever until they can consume bait. The only times I have seen bears that were basically inedible was when they were feeding on winterkill or rotten fish. I've eaten a lot of spring bears and they have all been good.
Shot a bear on April 30 with snow still on the ground and it was good.
