I have the freedom brand. I'm very happy with it. It's built to last. I also have a Mason hammer which works great when you're trying to be meticulous or chipping out frozen ground

Stop buying cheap hammers if you do buy cheap get a good replacement handle. I have had a couple hammers for many years, a rock type on I bought from M+M Furs 40 years ago on it's 3rd handle and a quality hand sludge that is a few years newer that has never needed an replacement handle. When I do break one it's from abuse often. I plan to replace the rocks hammer the next time it breaks with a brick hammer great for cutting trap beds. If your really hard on hammers just buy a couple out of the bargain tool display and toss them if you break them then, we can get 2 sledges with fiberglass handles for $10 on sale but I never used one on the line.

Much uncle made me one with a 3 lb sledge, leaf spring for digger welded to hammer head, and then he has some sort of special weld he did to edge of spring to make it hard and holds it's edge very well. I have a 24 ounce framing hammer that is solid one piece head and handle like an estwing style. I think I got it at Sears back in 70s or eighties. I'm still using that one too. Drives rebar well, digs well with the claw part. That thing has been used and abused like you won't believe. Pried stakes with it, dropped it off a three story roof once and it bounced off the concrete floor of a huge building we were working on at the time. There are some great tools out there just be creative and do some shopping. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

A lot of guys use a framing hammer as noted above, and they work good because of the design. It allows you to cut a straight sided trap bed if you choose. Tom Stalker makes a fine looking hammer that also has that straight cutting edge coming off the top. Having a straight side cutting blade on a hammer in lieu of a curved one is real nice for making beds.

Yep don't go crazy on the hole size you make your losing a lot of the bedding advantage of a tighter bed if you do~
