Can anyone explain a tried & true method of converting a dls to dogless? I found an older discussion here where a photo was posted by Jason Dufrense which showed a dls trap he had sucrssfully converted. I attempted to send him a PM but it wouldn't go through. I'm about to modify a good number of older Victor 3 & 4's to bring them out of retirement on my coyote line & would appreciate any good advice in the topic.

Thanks,
Brandon

Thanks for the replies. I'll be reworking over 100 dbl's by baseplating, laminating, & adding about 8' of chain & drag. I'm avoiding PIT pans because of the cost ($4-6/trap), these traps will be for some of the rocky & sandy areas on my line where it's difficult to impossible to bed a coilspring & drive a stake. For Most of my line I use coilsprings & Wolffang anchors. I'm gonna experiment w/ welding a nail on the pan & file as needed for the dogless conversion. Should I move the position of the pan maybe closer towards the loose jaw? Also, what about welding a tab on the inside of the loose jaw for the pan notch (filed edge of nail) to catch on instead of the dogless pan directly catching the looose jaw? In other words, try to mimic the way the jaws on a mb650 are held down by the little tab catching the firing mechanism, except it would be the loose jaw only. It's also worth noting that I'm adding a 4"x4" electrical box cover to the stock pan.

The pan pivot has to be real close to the dog side jaw. U cant use the regular pan pivot position to make it dogless

Ok that makes sense. I was thinking about backwards. Some older post on here show how a couple guys did it a couple different ways. I'm gonna give it a try. With a few modifications & being dogless, these old victors should be some great cat/coyote traps, even better than they were before.
Thanks for the help,
Brandon

Jason Dufresne closed his business several years ago.

Once you factor in your time to cut the crosspiece, lengthen it, and then fabricate a new pivot point I think you'll see the PIT pan is worth the money. Every land trap I own that isn't dogless has a PIT pan.

You might contact Tom Stalker. Nightstalker on here. He does this type of mod at his shop. I don't know the per trap cost, but he does some NICE work.

I might end up w/ PIT pans. I might gun notch the pans & dogs & wrap some light wire around the pan post.

If you run the PIT pan with the Stainless steel rod dog you will have a VERY short travel set up. NO MODS NEEDED to them. Like the old gun notch in feel. The pan it pretty tight so there is very little slop or pre-travel if you close the eye on the dog too.

I'm terrible at posting pictures, but if you google "DLS with PIT pan" you will see a few images that show how the pivot point moves under the jaw, but the dog engagement is practically in the same place. There are some other images showing electrical box covers over the PIT pans as well.

I used Bridger Dogless pans, but have now switched the NO-BS pans, as they are easier for me to get. Cut the cross frame, and add a new piece of stock, and then machine a pan post, and weld it all together.

Here are some Blake and Lamb #2s I am working on now. This is the other style Dogless conversion I can do. With both of these conversions, the pan post is moved back giving you the full benefit of a Dogless trap, which is a larger "kill area" because the "dead spot" common with dog on traps is greatly reduced.

That pivot outside the jaws is what makes dogless great. Any time the pivot is inside the jaw there is some "dead area", small or large. I like the Montgomery style best, maybe just because I'm used to it.

What's to explain? I thought tjm did a good job of explaining what he said. He is spot on. Not trying to bust your chops, just don't see how it can be made clearer! Study an old dogless monty, you will understand.
